Purchasing GPS Device Tips

| 0 comentários

Satellite navigation used to be present only on high-priced cars. Today, anyone can buy one. But there are so many choises – mobile phone-based, portable, in-car… which to select? We show you exactly what you need to know before buying a GPS unit.

mio-c620-frontangle0_3dfull_fr_468.jpg

You should considere the Map Coverage. Units sold in the US usually comes pre loaded with maps covering all North America and sometimes Canada. If you need maps from other countries, look at the gps brand web site for downloads availability for the county you want. Also, choose a unit with 3D map view (also called bird’s eye view). You should have a most pleasant navigation comparing to 2D maps.

Screen on GPS devices generally ranges from 3.5 inches to 7 inched diagonally and usually have a touchscreen capability. I would pick up one with at least 4.3 inches.

Some models have turn by turn navigation. Very usufull specially if you are using the unit on a car. You can hear the unit telling you “Turn Left in 200 meters at Broadway Avenue, or take a Right in 180 meters at Rodeo Drive street etc…

garmin-nuvi-gps.jpg

At http://www.satnav-expert.co.uk you can campare and buy a very large range of models, with excellent prices.

Some devices has the ability to receive real-time traffic alerts without a monthly or charge fee. That’s a very nice feature, if you don’t want to get traffic just around the corner.

Another important features to look for: Prefer a device with 24 channels (satellite signals) instead of 12 (usually cheaper models have 12 channels). You will have a more accurate position; Media Card Reader, so you can isert maps into SD memory cards, together with MP3 music and video files (if the unit have the ability to read this types of files); POI’s (points of interest) – it’s a database with hotels, restaurants, gas statitions, banks, etc…spots that you want to consult during you travels; Bluetooth; FM Transmitter; Music and Video Player and the Power Suplly.

Garmin-Nuvi-780-GPS.jpg

Sat Nav is one of the technologies that are becoming very popular, and prices are cheaper than ever.

The last tip: If I were you, definitely I go for a buy!

As with any other truck GPS navigation system this one also takes into account the dimensions and weight of the commercial vehicle you’re driving and provides driving route accordingly…

GlobalSat GS-3212 GPS navigation system; cheap and good maps

GlobalSat GS-3212 GPS navigation system is basic device with a 3.5 inch TFT LCD touch screen, and an SD card reader. It can do 3D rendering of certain buildings by default, and has about 1 million points of interests.

What’s special about this you may ask? Well if you’re looking for a non-mainstream GPS navigation system, say other than Garmin and TomTom; GlobalSat maybe your answer. In addition to feeling good about helping an underdog manufacturer you’ll also be pleased about the price tag which is only $140; and the maps which include USA, Canada, and Mexico. Seriously, who else offers all these three countries together?

Sprint looking to wholesale bandwidth to connected gadget makers

So, what's a flagging cellular operator to do once it has succumbed to the grim realization that no one wants to sign up for your service and you've already collected the dough from selling off nearly all of your towers? Go wholesale, of course! Unbeknownst to most, all of the Kindle downloads on Amazon's white-hot e-reader go through Sprint's network, and given just how successful that little venture has been, the carrier is hoping to expand its revenues from wholesaling bandwidth (which currently sits at just 3 percent of its total) by inking similar deals with connected gadget makers. From internet-connected vehicles to GPS systems to cameras, the options are darn near limitless, and with so much free capacity on Sprint's network, it might as well find companies to use it. 'Course, it's not like Sprint's the only one out there trying to carve these kinds of deals into stone, but it's definitely the one that needs to do it most immediately.

The device supports multiple truck profiles and features advanced routing and guidance to support truck-related road restrictions such as height, width, length, weight and hazardous materials. All you’ll have to do is enter some dimensions information and any other restrictions based on your load and nuvi 465T will adjust your route accordingly.

the nüvi 465T also provides locations in the National Truck and Trailer Services (NTTS) Breakdown Directory, a guide to semi-truck repair facilities nationwide. This information is preloaded and lets truckers find find truck-specific points of interest, such as truck repair, towing and recovery, tire sales and repair, glass repair, fuels stops and more.

nüvi 465T has a 4.3″ touchscreen display, comes with maps of US, Canada and Puerto Rico, speaks street names, and also features Bluetooth. It also does automatic time zone transition. Lifetime traffic alerts from NAVTEQ Traffic are free too. Some other alerts it can provide are truck hazards along the route such as sharp curves, steep grades, road narrows and more.

nuvi 465T will be available second quarter of this year and go for $500…

TrafficMaster SmartNav

smartnav

We thought we’d talk about TrafficMaster SmartNav since it has a different concept than most other GPS navigation systems out there.

It features only one button and with a press you get connected to the control center to speak with a personal assistant. Then you get to speak with this real person who will enter your destination into SmartNav central computers which has data on traffic delays. Then this optimized route which supposedly avoids traffic delays is automatically downloaded to your vehicle and you get your usual turn-by-turn directions. You’re always being watched so if you make a wrong turn or road conditions change you’ll be able to download new directions.

Other features include safety camera warnings, and a tracking service for stolen vehicles.

This pretty much is a UK version OnStar we have here in the U.S. But this one also works in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Switzerland.

iPhone's First Turn-by-Turn Navigation App Reviewed: Outstanding, Not Perfect

iPhone's First Turn-by-Turn Navigation App Reviewed: Outstanding, Not Perfect

Kicking Tires takes the iPhone's first turn-by-turn GPS navigation app, XROADS G-Map for a spin, and while it's got some issues, it's an 'outstanding value' for $40.

Here's the major issue, which is worse if you live in Illinois: The app is a 900MB beast, so it's split into east and west sections of the US, which have to be purchased separately at $20 a pop. The funky dividing splits Illinois into north and south halves, with each map app getting a piece. The other bad part is that not every street is labeled, so you actually have to use the turn-by-turn sometimes, which doesn't have any voices to guide you.

But everything else is pretty gravy: It has 'very clear, accurate and understandable direction,' sweet 3D renderings of highway interchanges, an easy-to-use UI, awesome point-of-interest functionality, and it comes with a decent car mount. Bottom line is that for $40, it handily competes with a $200 dedicated navigator. So be scared Garmins and Magellans of the world, be scared.

Pioneer AVIC-Z3

avic-z3

Pioneer AVIC-Z3 is a double DIN in-dash HDD based GPS navigation system. It is the most expensive from the manufacturer, with an MSRP of $1800 (however Amazon has Pioneer AVIC-Z3 for $1310). It has some impressive navigation features, so let’s go over those in more detail:

  • point addressing: many destinations are geocoded to a precise point instead of an address range.

  • 3D landmarks

  • high resolution display of traffic conditions

  • voice recognition of POIs without having to choose a category

  • text-to-speech

  • compatible with XM NAVTRAFFIC for live traffic updates

That’s all for navigation but that’s not what Pioneer AVIC-Z3 can do. The device is bluetooth capable so you can pair up a compatible phone. There’s a 30GB HDD, 10GB of which is dedicated to your tunes; and can be accessed with your voice. You can also bring your iPod in and control it using the 7″ touchscreen. Optical drive allows you to play DVDs, rip CDs, and play bunch of other media formats.

Review: Qstarz BT-Q1300S Sports Recorder

Review: Qstarz BT-Q1300S Sports Recorder

qstarz-1

For people interested in maintaining an active lifestyle, Qstarz has introduced the BT-Q1300S Sports Recorder. Basically, it is an updated version of the Qstarz BT-Q1300 Travel Recorder Nano (reviewed here in September 2008) that now includes the QSports software package and a bright orange armband. The ability to adjust the GPS signal sampling rate (for more or less accuracy) is also a new feature. I will not bother rehashing the device basics since it is virtually identical to the BT-Q1300 and I don’t have much to add to Gautam’s already good review. Instead, I will focus on the Qsports software.

My first impression of the Qsports software was that it was very easy to use. To begin, you first create a new user profile. This allows you to track separate workout plans and sessions for multiple persons. It prompts you for relevant information used for fitness calculations. You can then begin to import the logged tracks from the GPS device.

qstarz-2

Once the datalogs are downloaded, the Activities View will display summary information for your workouts. You can assign a name and activity type as well as add useful notes. The remaining data is taken from the GPS track log and used to calculate things such as speed and

the average elevation grade. I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to numbers and graphs so I loved the level of information provided. The detailed log of my hike was extremely useful and I’m sure runners, cyclists, etc… would also find this helpful.

qstarz-3

qstarz-4

qstarz-5

qstarz-6

qstarz-7

qstarz-8

The Health Management screen allows you track fitness and workout goals. Based on the personal information you provide, Qsports will calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index) and ask you to specify a target body weight. You can also set up your weekly, monthly, or yearly workout plan. The software will then track your sessions in a calendar format and provide feedback history via graphs.

qstarz-9

qstarz-10

qstarz-11

The Statistics View is another screen that will show your workout history. There are many options and preset views that could keep you busy to your heart’s content.

qstarz-12

Finally, I will mention two more items of note. As I mentioned at the top of this review, an added feature to the Sports Recorder is the ability to adjust the GPS signal sampling rate. Qsports has default log criteria but you can override these settings. I didn’t mess around with this option much but obviously it will affect the accuracy of your track log.

qstarz-13

The ability to export your track – as HTML, Google, or Track file – is also available. I really liked the HTML option. It essentially overlays your route on Google Maps, similar to a KML file. However, it differs in that you can playback and retrace your route as movie.

qstarz-14

qstarz-15

My overall opinion of the Qstarz BT-Q1300S Sports Recorder is that it is a fantastic product. As a photo/geotagging device, it was already a solid recommendation. I think the addition of the Qsports software package only increases its usefulness and value. Exercise buffs that enjoy monitoring their performance and activities will appreciate the detailed information and analysis. One disappointment I did have, though: Qsports only runs in Microsoft Windows. Sorry Mac users!

GPS-equipped FineDrive iQ500 PMP proves Korea's awesomeness once more

Seriously folks, is it really that hard? Can we North Americans get a few PMPs like this one, or are we destined to have but a few kinda-sorta similar Archos units to choose from? South Korea is proving yet again that its PMP designers are truly top notch with the FineDrive iQ500, which proudly sports an expansive 7-inch LCD (800 x 480 resolution), a 600MHz ARM processor, 4GB / 8GB of internal storage, an SDHC expansion slot, WinCE, GPS module, a DMB TV tuner and support for a smorgasbord of audio and video file formats. It's also spectacularly thin and drool-worthy, and naturally, can only be procured and fully enjoyed within the confines of its home nation. Oh, one question though: 'Oil Save?'

Garmin announced a new series of Nuvi GPS Navigators today as part of their CeBit announcements. The line of Nuvi 1200 and Nuvi 1300 navigators are going to supplement the current line of Nuvi units out there, but, appear to me to be a platform upgrade, as the unit is 25% thinner than the current already thin design.

Garmin saw fit to include the current innovations like a view of the upcoming intersections and free traffic subscriptions in several models which I think is a good move. I have to assume (and will check) that the free traffic is supported by the NAVTEQ ad model which inserts small innocuous ads on the screen after you have stopped for more than 10 seconds. I thought it was a good trade-off for free traffic when I used the first model to have this feature; the Nuvi 755T

Garmin has also created CityXplorer; a set of data that will allow the Nuvi to function and navigate you on public transit; making it easier to tour a city utilizing the full complement of options available to you for getting around. The modules will be available in the second quarter along with the 1200 and 1300 units. Cost for each city will be around $10.
