M.i.motion3318, M.i.motion4328 and M.i.more4338

myguide-4338.jpg

MyGuide just recently announced three new GPS navigation systems with names that are as difficult to say as they are to spell. The three new models are M.i.motion3318, M.i.motion4328 and M.i.more4338.

The highlight of the new product line is M.i.more4338 which offers integrated WiFi so you can connect to the internet when you’re say at a coffee shop parking lot.

Other new feature is the integrated TMC module which is standard with the M.i.motion4328 and M.i.more4338. What they call new here is the TMC antenna that is embedded in the car charger. Other brands figured this out a while ago but we guess later is better than never.

Another new feature they’re advertising is the Outlook contact download which lets you synchronize your contacts with your GPS navigation device. We see no use in this but the story may be different for a real estate agent who clients are mostly businessmen.

While all three provide hands free bluetooth, and text-to-speech, M.i.motion 3318 lacks audio player and picture viewer.

Here are the specs for M.i.more4338:

  • Navigate from door-to-door in your region in 24 languages with the new navigation software MyGuide 8.0

  • Li-Ion 2200 mAH Battery (4 h navigation Lifetime)

  • 400 MHz CPU

  • 2 GB Flash Memory, 128 MB RAM

  • Maximal 30 channel GPS

  • Operating system: Windows® CE 5.0

M.i.motion3318 has a 3.5″ and is planned to launch mid May 2008. M.i.motion4328 has a 4.3″ screen and will be out by the end of May. M.i.more4338 also has a 4.3″ screen and that will be out as soon as mid June.

Part of the coverage of the new Dash Express GPS that ships today is to show you what comes with the Dash Express and a little peek inside the box. I was told the other day by Dash that they are doing their best to get Dash Express units out to people who pre-ordered their units for delivery this morning. Yes, that's right, you stuck with them, were nice when they delayed shipments on the units for a month, and now Dash is giving a little back so that they are getting units on your doorstep Thursday, the day that the rest of us though the unit would simply ship, not deliver!

DashExpressOpenBox.jpgHere's a look at the Dash Express inside the box.

Here's a side view of the pretty sturdy mount.

iNAVI K2

inavi-k2-navigation.jpg

iNAVI K2 has the best 3D navigation software we’ve ever seen so far. Of course it is from Korea; a company called Thinkware announced iNAVI K2, a GPS navigation system that has 8GB of space on SDHC memory card, comes with 256MB of RAM, and has a 4.8″ WVGA screen with 800x480 resolution.

What makes iNAVI K2 so futuristic is the fact that 3D structures are rendered with actual realistic images of the buildings. You can also expect to get complete lane information about the road you are on to help you with your next turn.

iNAVI K2 GPS navigation system also integrates a geomagnetic 3 axis sensor which detects absolute north pole and can calculate the heading of your vehicle even in stand still.

It will retail for 549,000KRW which is about $550 but that shouldn’t matter since you’ll never get your hands on one of these in the States…

Inforemer-HDX is a GPS enabled golf management system designed by GPS Industries, successor to Inforemer. We’ve talked about many other GPS systems for golfers but this one seems to have the most features coupled with advertisements targeting the wealthy who spend their days golfing.

Inforemer-HDX combines GPS and wireless technology with powerful golf course management applications; designed for golf course operators.

Inforemer-HDX uses Windows and runs with open platform software. It uses Intel Strong Arm RISC Micro-controller and features Wi-Fi High-speed Wireless Network and Internet Protocols which lets their users fast access to rich online content and establish the golf course as a wireless Hot Spot.

The device also does two-way messaging to improve communications between players and the clubhouse. The GPS is also not any GPS but something called ‘Differential GPS’ for more precise distance measurements.

Garmin and Kenwood team up to market nav-enabled car stereos

Although Kenwood's been shipping nav-enabled car stereos powered by Garmin since 2006, they've mostly gone under the radar -- but now it looks like the two companies are so pleased with the arrangement that they're going to launch a combined marketing blitz and some new jointly-developed models. We've already seen a couple nifty Kenwood stereos with built-in nav (and some sweet concepts), but it looks like 2008 will bring even more units like the Garmin-powered Excelon DNX-8120 (pictured above) that launched at CES. All the new units are to have touchscreens with flash-based Garmin nav internals, as well as the usual high-end Kenwood features like Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD Radio, and iPod hookups. No new model numbers or prices have been announced yet, but the marketing partnership is apparently already underway -- get ready for the car stereo section of your local big box to be taken over.

MD Sound KO-GPS4

The MD Sound KO-GPS4 personal navigation device touts itself to be the first of its kind that features e-book support, although I do doubt that claim. Still, you can't expect too much from $249.99, so make sure that you will be able to live with a 4.3' touch screen display, integrated MP3 and MPEG4 playback, and a photo viewer. The KO-GPS4's li-ion battery can last up to three hours on a full charge, which is quite disappointing in my books.

Mio launches the Moov product line - Mio Moov 310 Review

Today, Mio unveiled four new GPS: Mio Moov 200, 210, 300 and 310, for a MRSP of $179.95, $199.95, $229.95 and $249.95 respectively. The 200 and 210 have a 3.5 TFT Anti-Glare Touch Screen (320 x 240) and the 300 and the 310 have a 4.3' TFT Anti-Glare Touch Screen (480 x 272). All the units come with the text-to-speech functionality, the 210 and the 310 include a one year free Traffic Messaging Channel (TMC) subscription subscription that gives real-time traffic updates. That's a good list of features for a relatively low price point.

This time, Mio has decided to get rid of all the non-navigation features that are usually present in their devices like MP3 player, video playback or photo browsing. We think this is a good news, since the majority of users do not use their GPS for entertainment - they all have a phone for that.

We tested the Mio Moov 310: it has a sleek and neutral look that fit most car interiors; I personally prefer the look of the Sony Nav U, but at that price, it is ok. The mount is small and discreet, but does not stick on all dashboard materials; I had to fix it on top of the instrument cluster since it would not stick on the dashboard texture (see photos). If you buy one, make sure that the texture of your dashboard is compatible with the mount adhesive.

In addition to the GPS navigation system DS-400GB also has video input monitor for rear view camera on its 4″ screen which makes us wonder if there’s any room left for an actual mirror. This high tech rear view mirror touch screen monitor comes with hands free bluetooth module to pair up with your phone, integrated speakers, SD/MMC memory card expansion slot, and a USB port. The rear view camera is activated automatically when in reverse gear.

The fold out GPS receiver is from SiRFStarIII, OS from Microsoft, and the CPU is from Samsung.

Quarq is a GPS enabled trainer for cyclists. It just got the Australian International Design Award for the promise to revolutionize the way cyclists train.

Quarq works hand in hand with multiple sensors to record and display heart rate, power generated, exact location, temperature, cadence, torque, acceleration, and more. The device is made up of two pieces: Qranium and Cinqo. Qranium is the piece that attaches to your handlebar and carries the display and the GPS receiver; it does the computing part. Cinqo is the piece that attaches to your wheels to measure torque, power, etc.

cinqo-gps.jpgQranium - the computer and the display - uses 2.4 GHz digital wireless, is fully customizable, uses Linux OS, and runs on open source code. It comes with 512MB of memory. This will cost you only $995.

Cinqo - the power sensor - also uses 2.4 GHz digital wireless technology, is ANT+Sport compatible, has 10 Strain gages, and uses a replaceable CR2450 battery. Weighing only 130 grams it should not be too much of a hassle when climbing up hills. Cinqo sells for $1195. Yes, those prices are not typos.

More features of this high end trainer include waterproof, lightweight, and rugged body; and a 2.8″ backlit display module. It seems like a device only pros can afford…

This GPS system called Navistar 3522 looks a little cheap, but I don’t remember seeing something like that before: it has a pair of speakers located on either side of the screen. If I believe the 3.5’ number that might describe the screen diagonal, it means that the overall size must be somewhat big. I really wonder if this is mean to take in the car or left at home, on the desk.

GTV-380 runs WinCE.NET 5.0 on a Samsung processor, uses SiRFStarIII GPS receiver, comes with 64MB RAM but has an SD/MMC slot for maps and memory expansion.

The Zoombak GPS receiver is small - so small, it equals to the size of a Zippo lighter while integrating a GPS receiver and cellular radio within. It is capable of reporting back on its location when queried, and the Zoombak will be available in two variations - one for use in vehicles while the other is meant for dog owners to keep track of their four-legged friends. Both products will be identical in nature, but the only difference would be the included accessories where the pets version comes with a collar attachment. Unfortunately, the Zoombak is not waterproof so it would be prudent to be more careful during those wet days. The Zoombak Car Tracker and Dog Tracker will retail for $249 and $199, respectively. You will also need to subscribe to a $15 monthly service fee, allowing you to check up on where your vehicle/pooch is no matter where you are.

GPS for truckers

Teletype_worldnav_truck_gps

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've had comments from truck drivers asking for a GPS receiver designed to fit their needs. Most major GPS manufacturers allow you to choose truck routing, but there hasn't been a device that explicitly routed for bridge heights and clearances, load limits, one-way road designations, left-hand turns, etc. Until now, that is.

TeleType has announced the WorldNav truck routing GPS, available in a 3.5' and a 7' model. In addition to the above, the devices offer ten levels of Hazmat routing.

The Holux M-241 Helps You Tag Your Digital Photos

Holux M-241 GPS Logger and Bluetooth Dongle

One of the inherent problems with digital photos is keeping tracking of them. Ideally the camera would figure out whose in the scene and tag accordingly. For now, our best bet is a GPS logger, such as the Holux M-241 (resembles a Kodak analog film roll). Just slip the device in your pocket and turn it to on. Once it acquires coordinates it will capture its location (up to 130,000 way points) in preset intervals with time stamp. Once the photos are uploaded you simply need to match the time stamps and bingo, you’ve got tagged pictures. Sure it still doesn’t tell you who (wink) or what you were doing, but at least they’ll be more manageable then ‘pic-10102′. The M-241 also works as a Bluetooth GPS dongle enabling compatible devices to become full blown GPS units.

Available here for $69 (on sale).

QStarz BT-Q1000P review

qstarz-bt-q1000p.jpg

QStarz BT-Q1000P was just announced last month and we were lucky enough to receive a sample product for review. The BT-Q1000P is first off a dual function device: It can be a bluetooth GPS receiver to pair with your PDA or smartphone or you can use it as a standalone travel recorder. BT-Q1000P is already available for pickup from Amazon for $100 and it seems to receive good reviews from other users on the internet.

When we first picked up this bluetooth GPS receiver we charged it and put it in our vehicle. That’s all. We decided worry about the software later. We pretty much forgot about it for the rest of the day and were happily surprised to see it still blinking away about 12 hours later. That is actually normal - for it says it can last up to 32 hours on a single charge.

bt-q1000p.jpgThe software installed without any problems on our Windows XP machine and successfully started Google Earth and showed our recorded track very precisely. You configure QStarz BT-Q1000P with this software because the hardware only has two buttons. One to switch it between off, log, and log + navigation mode, and another button to record your immediate position. The software lets you configure the tracking by time, distance, or speed, and you can even set the frequency of each one to record a waypoint.

As far as hardware, the ‘P’ at the end of the BT-Q1000P says it is the ‘platinum’ version which means it can record up to 200,000 waypoints instead of 100,000. It uses a 51 channel MTK GPS receiver chipset which got a satellite position fix in less than half a minute during our review.

BT-Q1000P has a high-friction padding on the bottom so it sits on your dash without the need for a mount which was a nice touch.

Now that we’re done with this bluetooth GPS receiver there’s a good change we’ll give it away to a Navigadget reader ;) Keep reading.

new Mio Moov

With its classic design, Mio today displayed its new range of navigators called Mio Moov at CeBIT in Germany. These are the first products to hit the market after the merge of Mio and Navman, and the result is a range of five GPS navigation systems for automobiles.

Aside from the design and some new specifications, the main new feature of these navigators is that they come accompanied with a pack of contents and services called MioMore, that among other things allows local searches of points of interest with the Local technology Search. Also you can take and later look at these POIs on the computer thanks to Mio’s software for PCs, and modify and download them back to the navigator.

Another new feature on the Mio Moov is in the hardware. They use the new InstantFixII from SIRF which tries to make a smart guess about the positions of the satellites to cut a few seconds from the time-to-first-fix.

The new Moov’s which come with Teleatlas maps are:

Moov 330 Regional and Moov 330 Europe

With prices of 180 and 230 Euros respectively, both models only are different in the maps they offer; regional or of all Europe. Their common features are:

  • 4.3″ screen

  • Radar alert

  • NavPix, navigation through photos

  • Built-in speedometers

Moov 370 Europe

Also with a 4.3″ and a price of 280 Euros, this one offers:

  • Life time subscription traffic information

  • Hands free bluetooth

  • 3D data maps such as in MioMap 2008

  • Radar alert

  • NavPix, navigation through photos

  • Built-in speedometers

Moov 200 Regional and Moov 200 Europe

Both these models have SiRF InstantFixII technology, like their companions, come with 3.5″ touc screen, and have prices of 150 and 180 Euros, based on the maps that you choose.

GPS for iPhone via WiFi

GPS for iPhone via WiFi

locogps-iphone.jpg

Last December, we talked about a company (gomite) which designed a GPS module for the iPhone called LocoGPS. The same people have now designed a wireless module to do the same job and is expected to hit the market as soon as Summer 2008. Also called LocoGPS.

Since the bluetooth on iPhone is reserved for only wireless headset they actually used WiFi to transmit data between the GPS receiver and iPhone. To make this possible the GPS receiver integrates a processor, Wi-Fi antenna, and even a microSD card slot to store the maps. The navigation software itself will also be accesssed via the WiFi GPS receiver using a web interface. The navigation software used and customized for LocoGPS is iGO 8.

This WiFi powered LocoGPS should be available as soon as June and should cost about 120 € with navigation software included…
