Navigon 8110 - 3D maps on your Car GPS

Navigon8110.jpg

Navigon has the Navigon 8110 out in the UK and it comes with new 3-D maps that allow you to see the contour of the roads and landscape around you. I assume they've figured out how to show you what's n the other side of that hill when you are coming up to its peak.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this come out on a Garmin device here soon. The recent introductions including the Garmin Colorado handheld and the Nuvi 500/550 series announced yesterday they are showing the basic components of this: 3-D views on the Colorado, that allow you to see what lies ahead in a similar point of view. While the Nuvi 500/550 has the normal 2-D topographical maps, it sets the stage for other offerings and map options that must have Garmin playing with alternative representations of how you would like to drive down the road.

Garmin nuvi 500 and 550 for driving, walking, cycling or boating

Garmin_nuvi_500

The rumors were true -- Garmin announced today the introduction of the nuvi 500 series -- multi-use navigators for driving, cycling, walking and boating. Ruggedized and waterproof, the nuvi 500 series sports a 3.5' touchscreen and appears to share the feature set and much of the interface of the nuvi 2x5 series I wrote about this morning, including the ability to add MSN Direct or FM/TMC traffic.

The nuvi 500 comes with pre-loaded City Navigator and topo maps of the 48 contiguous United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The 550 offers highway coverage of the entire U.S. and Canada but drops the topo maps.

Both units have a removable, li-ion battery (rated at up to 8 hours), with a micro-SD card slot underneath it. A usage mode indicator at the top of the home screen (pictured below) allows you to change modes.

Unlike the' 2x5 series, the units support multi-destination routing, and I assume this applies to driving mode as well as the other modes. They do not support text-to-speech.

One big unknown is whether or not the units support a dedicated geocaching mode, with full-blown paperless geocaching support ala the Colorado and Oregon series.

Availability is listed as the 3rd quarter, and I expect we'll see these units at the Outdoor Retailer (OR) trade show next month if not sooner. One retailer is showing an availability date of August 10 for the nuvi 500, which coincides well with an unveiling at OR.

I'll either update this post or put up a new post as additional information becomes available.

Holux is about to come out with a new GPS receiver tracking device that works in sync with a wrist watch to communicate its location.

The details of this GPS receiver + wrist watch combo is quite unclear but we think the GPS receiver component is in the bigger black box and the data is transmitted to the GPS watch.

We’ll keep you updated once we find out more about this.

Becker Z100 - Crocodile

Becker have designed a new and hardened and more resistant version of its portable GPS Z101 which we mentioned back in May. This new GPS navigation system; Becker Z100, is nicknamed Crocodile since it is outer casing looks like it has scales.

Z100 Crocodile has a wide screen that measures 4.3″ and Navteq maps of 40 countries in Europe stored on a 2GB SD memory card. It works with live traffic information via RDS/TMC Premium and integrates SiRF Star III GPS receiver chip with the SiRF InstantFixII functionality which allows the prediction for satellite locations and thus a faster GPS fix.

The navigation software comes from Navigon which provides advanced guidance with its 3D RealityView and another innovation which shows pictures of the next turn zoomed in on one screen and general view of the map on another.

No news on when or for how much it will be available just yet…

It's bad enough that lack of memory bogs an Alzheimer Patient, but keeping track of them can takes its toll on the minders. Spanish company Keruve has come out with a GPS device, which can be worn like a bracelet, to keep a tab on Alzheimer's patients. The system is made up of a special bracelet and a PSP like handheld device that indicates the location of the person wearing the bracelet. The bracelet is water resistant and can only be taken off using a special tool. The bracelet GPS receiver works with GSM1800 and GSM900 networks to broadcast its location to the base unit. The system has a battery life of 3.5 days and should the levels reach low, an alarm sounds off.
The GPS Bracelet device for Alzheimer Patients is available in Europe and sells for €850 or $1.345.

palm treo 800w with GPS

Palm and Sprint today officially announced Palm Treo 800W with integrated GPS. With the embedded GPS and Palm software, Treo 800w smartphone offers maps, point-to-point directions and point-of-interest (POI) searches.

This is Sprint’s newest smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional which is designed for business users who depend on their smartphones for high-speed work on the go. Palm Treo 800w operates on the Sprint and utilizes EV-DO Rev. A networks.

Palm Treo 800w has a nice 320x320 screen, 2MP camera, and a microSD card slot. It will cost $250 if you’re willing to stay loyal to Sprint for two years. The door-to-door navigation is of course extra and will cost an extra $10 on top of your voice/data plan.

If you want to see a nice review check out pocketnow.

Once the GPS Navigation program starts up, your selected destination is instantly set up and in moments, the voice prompts start telling you exactly which way to go in order to get there. This integration (combined with the extremely high speed GPS fix times) makes the Treo 800w by far the easiest to use GPS Navigation system I’ve ever seen.

garmin oregon 400t

Finally we have Garmin Oregon 400t which will fly off the shelves since it only costs $640 ( end sarcasm). While the other 400 Oregon models (400i, 400c) specialize in freshwater and saltwater, 400t specializes in topo maps and 3D map views.

The map that comes with Oregon 400t include details such as national, state and local parks and forests, terrain contours, elevation information, trails, rivers, lakes and points of interest. And in case topo maps mean nothing to you you can switch to the 3D map view to get an idea of how steep the hill is.

The rest of the specs such as the microSD card slot, USB interface, 3″ screen, barometric altimeter, electronic compass, rugged IPX7 waterproof case is all standard on 400t.

garmin oregon 300

One up model from Oregon 200 is Garmin Oregon 300 which was announced just yesterday with the rest of the models.

For $533 MSRP Oregon 300 offers the usual basemaps - but this time with shaded relief. It also adds some hardware changes to offer the electronic compass and the barometric altimeter features. It also has 850MB of built-in memory compared 200’s 24MB but we’re not sure how much of that space is actually free.

Another extra with Garmin Oregon 300 is the ability to share data wireless with other units.
