Thanko GPS watch

GPSTRVBK

Thanko of Japan is getting to release a new GPS watch that actually looks like an ordinary wristwatch. If it wasn’t for the battery, satellite, and way point icons and LEDs on its face you wouldn’t be able to tell this little thing was tracking your location. The name of this GPS watch is unfortunately GPSTRVBK which means nothing in any known language on earth.

Once you wear this watch, or convince somebody to wear it, you can transfer the GPS track logs to a PC and lay them over Google Maps. It sells for 17800 Yen (~ $200) in Japan, and apparently it is coming to geekstuff4u.com very soon…

Magellan SE4 navigation unit turns up at Best Buy

Well, Magellan doesn't seem to be doing much talking about this one itself just yet, but Best Buy has a fresh listing for a new SE4 nav unit from the company, and it seems to be available right now. Better still, Best Buy also looks to have knocked a full $60 off the MSRP right of the bat, bringing it down to just $119.99. That'll get you a 4.3-inch touchscreen, NAVTEQ maps of the 48 contiguous states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, six million POIs, and text-to-speech and turn-by-turn voice prompts, but seemingly few other notable features to speak of -- not even so much as a memory card slot or MP3 playback, if Best Buy's listed specs are right.

Kenwood DNX5140

dnx5140

We’re not sure why we haven’t mentioned the Kenwood DNX5140 before but maybe that’s a good thing. The MSRP for this 6.1″ TFT LCD touchscreen GPS navigation system with radio, and optical disc support was $1150 when it first came out in January, 2009 but now Amazon offers it for $606.

It includes built-in Garmin navigation, direct iPod connection, USB music streaming, and front panel A/V input and output.

Kenwood DNX5140 has all of the features of the DNX6140 but with the built-in Bluetooth module deleted.

TomTom GO I-90

tomtom-I-90

TomTom GO I-90 is the latest in car infotainment plus GPS navigation system from the company. This retro fitted device takes up 2-DIN on your dashboard and therefore can be installed in many cars, including older ones.

TomTom GO I-90 combines radio too so you don’t have to give up your favorite station but it lacks a CD slot. However that’s not all that bad since listening to tunes on your CD is so old school. GO I-90 does support USB storage devices - which would be a really easy way to bring your music on board.

Another benefit of TomTom GO I-90 integrated solution in addition to completely getting ridding of charging cables and mounts is that it works with the audio system in your car which should be nice and loud and interference free since it would mute your music while directions are being announced.

TomTom GO I-90 comes with maps of Western Europe pre-installed, supports bluetooth connected phones for hands free and will be available starting December 2009 for Є599.

More features:

  • Pre-installed map of Western Europe

  • TomTom Map Share technology - so drivers get daily map changes from the TomTom community.

  • TomTom Safety Alerts, including safety cameras.

  • Enhanced Positioning Technology - for uninterrupted navigation, even in tunnels.

  • Improved hands-free calling - so drivers can make and answer phone calls safely while driving.

  • Help-Me! emergency menu - local information to get help quickly.

  • Optional iPod support - optimal support for iPod playback and iPod charging.

  • Optimised TMC reception through the car’s antenna.

  • Address speech recognition and text-to-speech.

  • USB connection for MP3/I-pod.

  • Amplifier (4 x 40 WATT).

  • FM reception.

  • RDS support for PS, AF, TA.

  • AM reception (LW and MW).

  • Built in TMC receiver.

  • Ready for steering wheel control (3rd party accessory).

  • Connectors to car and outside world (GPS, USB, iPod).

iPod Touch GPS navigation

ipod-gps-navigation

Geolife and PosiMotion just announced a turn-by-turn navigation app which is submitted to the Apple App Store. It is currently pending approval but when it gets the green light it will be the first GPS navigation app solely designed for the iPod touch.

The way it works is that it uses PosiMotion’s G-Fi mobile network/GPS router and the GPS navigation software from Geolife’s Navmii. The app can turn any iPod touch into a personal navigation device with smart routing, interactive maps and spoken directions.

G-Fi currently costs $99, and the Navmii iPhone application will be available for £30 for UK maps and $40 for US maps. A combined G-Fi mobile network/GPS router and Navmii software application for iPod touch will also be available once the Navmii application has been approved by Apple.

We have a list of all the iPhone GPS navigation apps.

Navmii GPS navigation app for the iPhone have also been submitted to the Apple App Store. See the video after the jump…

Stick This Thing to Your Kid and You Won't Lose Them

The Insignia Little Buddy is a $100 child-tracking GPS system. You simply duct tape the Little Buddy to your kid, and you'll never lose the little bugger again (involuntarily).

A web interface positions you various little ones on a map marked with your custom 'safety zones.' But the most enticing feature, if we're studying the GPS tracking page properly, is that you can assign your children with various barnyard animal iconography. That'll teach little piggy the consequences of being late.

The Little Buddy will be on sale at Best Buy shortly, and we assume the service could come with some sort of monthly cost.

Garmin G3000

garmin-g3000-1

We wish we could have a few things to say about Garmin’s new G3000. But since no staff member flys or owns a jet here at Navigadget we - just like you - are just staring at the pics and thinking how awesome it would be to use one of these things.

Garmin G3000 is a the first touchscreen-controlled integrated flightdeck for light turbine aircraft says the press release.

Some features of G3000 include:

  • icon-driven interface

  • 5.7-inch diagonal touchscreen controller

  • infrared touchscreen technology with audio and visual feedback

  • 14.1-inch diagonal WXGA high resolution primary flight displays (PFD) and multi-function display (MFD)

  • three-axis, fully digital, dual channel, fail passive auto flight system

Garmin expects to be certified for G3000 in the second half of 2011.

TomTom Go I-90 integrates into any dashboard, brings radio 'infotainment'

TomTom has been on a mission to keep itself relevant as smartphones increasingly start to overstep on its territory, and the GO I-90 is another move in its counteroffensive plan. Capable of slotting into the double DIN slot usually reserved for in-car radio / music players, its big selling point is that it integrates into your dashboard yet is still capable of being moved around like a discrete nav unit. You wouldn't be left decrying the loss of your radio either, with the GO I-90 sporting FM (with RDS support) and AM reception, USB support for MP3 players including iPods, and a promised compatibility with an 'extensive' list of phones for handsfree calling -- unfortunately, the poorly worded PR makes no mention of Bluetooth so we're not sure how they'll pull that off. Throw in a guarantee to receive the latest maps, TomTom's Map Share for crowdsourced routes, and a Help-Me! emergency menu, and you get a pretty comprehensive product. Shame about that €599 (about $893) sticker then. Available in Europe in December.

Thanks to the G1000’s lightweight and modular design, the G1000 installation results in a weight savings of approximately 100 pounds.

Insignia GPS child tracker

insignia-child-tracker

We just discovered that Insignia is about to release a GPS child tracking device called Insignia Little Buddy. It is already up on Best Buy’s site but it has a ‘coming soon’ status right now. However we at least know it is going to cost $100.

It seems like it supports real time GPS tracking but we have no information on what the monthly cost is going to be or which provider Best Buy decided to go with.

The Insignia GPS child tracker will have an accompanying website to keep track of your kids - and have an idea where they should be based on a weekly schedule.

Find a way to attach this to the car charger and you’ve got yourself a GPS vehicle tracking device.

You’ll have to wait until October 23rd though.

insignia-child-tracker-2

From Best Buy product page:

Keep tabs on your child at all times with this small but sophisticated device that combines GPS and cellular technology to provide you with real-time location updates. The small and lightweight Little Buddy transmitter fits easily into a backpack, lunchbox or other receptacle, making it easy for your child to carry so you can check his or her location at any time using a smartphone or computer. Customizable safety checks allow you to establish specific times and locations where your child is supposed to be — for example, in school — causing the device to alert you with a text message if your child leaves the designated area during that time. Additional real-time alerts let you know when the device’s battery is running low so you can take steps to ensure your monitoring isn’t interrupted.

Garmin Nuvi 1450 introduced quietly

Garmin is getting ready for the holiday season and has introduced the Nuvi 1450, which is a no-nonsense version of the Nuvi 1490T. How so? You get the same navigation experience, but you don't have to pay for the Bluetooth and the live traffic features (that you probably don't use anyway). Still, this GPS costs $500, which is still in the 'high' range for a personal navigation device.

Ripxx is already targeting athletes-in-training with its GPS-enabled Personal Measurement Device, but it looks as if that very unit may have a little competition. Satsports GPS claims to be the world's first device to combine 'true real time interactive navigation for skiing, snowboarding, golfing, running, cycling and automotive enthusiasts in a portable, all-weather device.' Granted, it's not like you couldn't get your hands on a rugged navigator before, but the software here is what takes things to another level. It promises athletes real-time routing and data logging, and after your runs are through, you can sync the data with Google Earth to get a good look at what all you just accomplished. As for specs, you'll find a 2.7-inch touchscreen, 400MHz Samsung processor and a microSD expansion card. Oh, and if you're not down with dropping $490 on this, you can opt for the Satski, Pocket Caddy and / or Sports Log apps for WinMo and Android. Wi-Fi Bracelet Tracks Grandma or That Cheating Whore of a Husband

Ekahau's T301W Wi-Fi Bracelet can pinpoint the exact location of anyone wearing it, without the use of GPS. But there's a catch.

While cellphones often use Wi-Fi to triangulate a person's position in the world, the T301W only works on preconfigured Wi-Fi networks that are coupled with additional beacons. In other words, you sort of build your own Wi-Fi triangulation network in a smaller area.

But the idea is still pretty handy. The $60 waterproof wristband operates up to a month between recharges, and it would allow hospitals to keep tabs on troubled patients, family members to locate one another on cruise ships and, when coupled with a remote detonation device, could make anyone capable of running their own forced labor camp.

Whistler GPS Red Light Camera Detector

We think the Whistler GPS Red Light Camera Detector is a bit too big for serving only one purpose. Not to mention it’ll cost you $20/year after the first free year - that is if you decide to keep it on your dash that long. Maybe you will since you’ll have spent a whopping $200 on the initial hardware.

But anyhow - here is what this red light camera detector can do. In its database it stores locations of 6000 red light and speed camera locations in the US of A and Canada. It has integrated GPS and figures out if you’re approaching one of these locations. And then the 1.6″ color OLED screen displays your current position on a digital street map, and gives you visual and audible cues, shows how far away you are from the red light camera.

The database is updated monthly.

Ecco GPS locator

ecco-gps-locator

Ecco GPS Locator is a little handy GPS device that can help you locate things, places, etc. Not to be confused with GPS vehicle tracking, this little thing can only mark where you are - but can’t transmit its location back to you or anyone else. It is what we like to call a GPS backtracker.

Let’s say you’re visiting a new city and want to take a walk outside and discover some places. It would be a good idea to mark your position as soon as your step out your hotel, so you can always head back safely. It actually lets you store up to 3 locations - so why not another for where you parked your rental, and another for the restaurant you saw on the way. Ecco GPS locator is as small as a basic key fob and doesn’t look much different other than the blue backlit LCD screen. It can track 32 satellites at once and promises to get you a position fix in 60 seconds.

When it is time to head back to one of your marked spots this GPS locator can you show you the distance and an arrow pointing where you need to go. Imperial or metric. It measures 1.5x0.5x3 inches. Costs $99 on Amazon.

It should be available before the end of the year and cost somewhere around $150 - can’t wait? Pre-order them.

MicroDAGR can provide soldiers on the war zone with real-time position, navigation, maps and timing information on a color touch screen display. Apparently it is small enough to be worn on the wrist, attached to a lanyard, or placed in a pocket.

The company listened to some feedback from the soldiers on the field to develop MicroDAGR and so they included vibration alert, MP3 player, and even a digital camera. No, don’t immediately assume this is all for entertainment. The press release says:

These features will allow soldiers to record geo-rectified images of the battlefield for after-action review and analysis, listen to foreign language translations of important commands and phrases and get silent alerts from their MicroDAGR when they reach preprogrammed waypoints and/or danger areas.

Rockwell Collins’ MicroDAGR will be available as soon as January of next year. Join the forces to get your hands on one of these.

nuviphone G60 reviews

garmin-nuviphone-review

A couple of reviews already came out about the nuviphone G60 we waited for years. One from pcmag, and the other one from Gizmodo. Neither of them look that good but if you have your heart set on this device you should really read the reviews and look for specifics that would actually change your mind.

pcmag: You can search for points of interests with your voice, great map detail, no DC power adapter for charging, voice directions not very loud, comes with document viewer, no MMS, bad camera, no video recording or playing, good battery life.

Still, the G60 is the best cell-phone-based GPS navigation device I’ve ever tested.

gizmodo: bad touchscreen, bad camera, bad accelerometer, $5 extra to check weather, traffic, etc, no car chager, good navigation.

I didn’t mean to be this harsh, but I also didn’t expect the G60 to be so bad.

Have you seen any other nuviphone G60 reviews? Please share URLs in the comments section.

Garmin Oregon 300 has been around for a while here in the U.S. and it seems like the same is true for the Spain. In fact Spaniards may be a step ahead of us.

Garmin collaborated with micólogos and associations of mycology to put all this fungi information into the database. In each card the common name is included, the name in Latin, the family it belongs, and a brief description with an identifying photo.

News about a new TomTom GPS navigation system has leaked out thanks to a UK retailer. It appears to be called TomTom Start, and as the name may suggest, it is an entry level sat nav device.

The price tag of TomTom Start is £120 for the local version and £140 for the European version. It only measures 94mm by 81mm on the front side and is 20mm in thickness. It has a 3.5″ touchscreen and comes with the famous new ‘EasyPort’ mount… <

In-Car Camera Catches Careless Driving

carcamvoyager

The pitch reads like this: ‘The new Car Cam Voyager with LCD is the first vehicle camera to let you see exactly what is happening in real-time while you’re driving.’

You may have thought that the windshield did a pretty good job of letting ‘you see exactly what is happening in real-time while you’re driving’, but the reality is that you now need a camera to do it for you. Of course, the Car Cam Voyager with LCD doesn’t aim to replace the glass window at all. Instead it is there to provide you with ammunition in the inevitable legal shenanigans that accompany auto-accidents in the US.

The camera sits on your dash (or hangs from the ceiling) and records everything that goes on — other people cutting you up as well as every red light you run. The footage comes in at 720 x 480 and is saved to a microSD card, and if you spring for 32GB of storage you’ll have space for 48 hours of video. The whole thing is powered by the cigarette lighter and unless you opt for a mount, you don’t have to do any installation.

The unit will cost $400, and this might be the thing that kills it: For $400 you can buy a regular camera, and although it won’t plug into the lighter socket, adapters can be bought. This should instead be combined with a GPS unit, thus making it a set and forget option on something you always have on the dash anyway.

TomTom XL 325

TomTom has a couple of new models out called TomTom XL 325, and TomTom XL 325-S. Their product pages on TomTom’s website lead to nowhere but at least Walmart has the product details up.

TomTom XL 325 has a 4.3″ widescreen, comes with maps of U.S. only and comes with TomTom’s famous Fold & Go EasyPort mount. How much? $130 only.

TomTom XL 325 S on the other hand is pretty much the same deal but adds text-to-speech functionality. However we don’t know how much this one will cost.

Navin miniHomer GPS waterproof keyring compass

If you’ve ever lost your car, wife or house because of your poor sense of direction, then the miniHomer from Navin may save the day.  A keyring-sized GPS compass, the miniHomer may not have an appetite for donuts but it will store up to five different locations (one of which could be a donut store, admittedly) and guide you back to them with a digital compass.

It’s also waterproof to IPX7 standards and has a selection of different location categories - including home, car and restaurant - so you can differentiate between each point.  Charging is via miniUSB connection, and while Navin are playing coy on exactly how long a single charge will last for, the miniHomer will at least preserve the stored coordinates even if the battery dies.

A backlit display and straightforward controls round out the navigator, and there’s a clock in there too.  No word on pricing - though Navin tell us it’ll be no more expensive than GPS navigators currently on the market - but it’ll drop in November.

GPS tracking for Alzheimer’s patients

keruve_alzheimer_gps-2

Vision Localization Systems and CEAFA (Spanish Confederation of Relatives of Alzheimer’s) just unveiled a new and improved GPS tracking system for Alzheimer patients and their families called Keruve 2010. Keruve 2010 is made up of two parts. The base station which helps you locate where the patient is, and the super sleek wrist watch that actually looks pretty stylish too.

Different from their previous version, this GPS locator is a lot more discrete and comes in three gentleman models (classic, sports), two lady models, and even a unisex model - wrist watch without any compromise in functionality.

The device relies on four different tracking systems which includes GPS-SBAS (<2.5m), a special indoor positioning system (10-40m), VisionCellid (200-500m), and T-GSM (200m-1500m), and has a feature called ‘multicoverage’ which use the sum of all GSM networks available in each country.

The base station has a 4.2″ screen, display streets with large letters, and has an ergonomic design. We don’t have any information on how much this GPS tracking system from Alzheimer’s patients will cost but it can’t be that cheap.
