Clarion announces new MiND, a Mobile Internet Navigation Device

Clarion MiND

Clarion recently came out with a product that combines everyone’s on-the-go, PMP, GPS, and Internet, needs into one device.' Here comes the Clarion MiND (Mobile Internet Navigation Device).' Although it doesn’t come with cell phone support, so maybe not all your on-the-go-needs, but 3 out of the 4 isn’t bad.

When thinking of devices that incorporate all these essential features, only a few devices come to mind, such as the iPhone, UMPCs, and maybe NetBooks. However, each of those devices lack some features that the Clarion MiND has, except for iPhone which can make calls.

To begin with, the MiND comes with a 4.8 inch WVGA LCD GPS-esque touch screen, with 800x480 resolution. With a screen like this, it makes viewing maps, videos, and the Internet a whole lot better. In addition, one of the main and standout features is the processor it uses, the Intel Atom processor. With a processor such as this one, it becomes a lot like a PC and loads everything very fast. It connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi and unfortunately, there is no 3G connectivity.

Another cool feature about the MiND is the car connectivity it comes with. For example, if you purchase the vehicle docking system, you can connect the device to play audio using the speakers, and have the car speakers read out the GPS directions. It also comes with something called ‘Human Mobile Music Media Interface’, or H.M.I, which is an interface guide that can lock certain features when the car is in motion. This technology will probably prove to be very helpful as it can stop people from using the Internet when driving and other possibly dangerous features.

Tatsuhiko Izumi, president of Clarion, had this to say about their latest device -

‘ClarionMiND represents the perfect balance between leading-edge hardware technology and next-generation software solutions. Delivering an Intel Atom-powered full Internet experience that integrates the latest advances in navigation capability with multifaceted entertainment functions, the innovative ClarionMiND demonstrates our commitment to finding new ways to connect people with their music and information in a mobile environment.’

The Clarion MiND is set to be available in early November in both Canada and the U.S. In January 2009, Clarion plans to release it in Europe selling for either $649.99 or 649.99 Euros. Lastly, a Premium model featuring 3G connectivity is set to be available next Spring. I’ve seen many high-end GPSs sell for similar prices, but this definitely looks to be better than those as it comes with other key features such as Internet. It’ll be interesting to see how it sells as compared to other similar devices.

garmin nuvi 775t

Amazon was nice enough to put a date on the ‘not yet released’ Garmin Nuvi 775T which we mentioned back in August. The release date is now October 1st and you can already pre-order it.

Garmin Nuvi 775T is kind of an high-end product offering maps of both North America and Europe, lane assistance to help merge before it’s too late, bluetooth for hands free calls, and live traffic information with its integrated FM traffic receiver. Speaking of which this feature costs money in U.S. but is free in most of Europe. It also has an FM transmitter which this time is illegal in some European countries - namely France, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Hungry, and Poland.

As expected nuvi 775T will cost $800.

track your athlete with GPS

GTX Corp and myathlete today officially announced gpVector and it is expected to ship early 2009.

Before you ask gpVector is a tracking platform for athletes which offers the shown device worn by the racer (even if they’re in the water) and transmits their location determined by the GPS technology onboard via wireless carrier networks every minute they are on the course - which in English means you’ll able to track your loved one from the comfort of your house while he/she tortures themselves running the last 20 miles of an ultra-marathon. They don’t need your support anyways.

Offered by myatlete this device will cost $350 plus monthly fee for purchase but you’ll also be able to rent it for your event:

  • $20 - Half Marathons

  • $30 - Marathons & Half Ironman Triathlons

  • $40 - Ultra-Marathons & Adventure Races

  • $50 - Ironman Triathlons, Ultra-Ultra Marathons and multi-day events

After recently revamping its NAV-U line of portable GPS devices, Sony dropped by to give us a first look at their top of the line NAV-U94T model that should be hitting store shelves soon. We've already covered many of the new features offered by this device, but hands-on time with the device gives us a little more insight. In order of importance, here are the features we liked most:

traffic screen

Navigation enabled units display traffic issues in order of proximity.

(Credit: CBS Interactive)

The first feature demonstrated was the Position Plus technology which uses a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and (interestingly) a barometer to keep track of vehicle position to continue navigation when satellite reception is lost. We chose San Francisco's Stockton Street Tunnel as our destination, which is approximately three blocks long, and set off. Partway through the tunnel, we lost satellite reception, indicated by the display's position triangle turning orange, but the U94T seemed to keep track of our position.

Applying the brakes, we began to slow, then briskly sped back up. The speed readout on the display kept track of these changes as well. Emerging from the other end of the tunnel, the device quickly locked on to satellite reception and we moved on to the next part of testing.

Velocity 83 does GPS

This GPS equipped phone from Velocity is simply called ‘83″ and it runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. Apparently it was unveiled at CTIA in San Francisco and is expected to hit the shelves as soon as this November. The price: $500. A bit too much considering it doesn’t do 3G. The features are still plenty though. 2MP camera, WiFi antenna, quad-band GSM, and a sharp 2.8″ screen.

The interesting part is the dual micoSD card slots. One of them is for your usual storage and other is dedicated to holding your maps for the navigation software. Not a bad idea eh?…
