Magellan RoadMate 1470 review

magellan-roadmate-1470

Magellan RoadMate 1470 was announced back in April and today we have a review for you - in case you are interested in spending your money on one of these. (Currently $194 on Amazon)

The first you’ll notice about the RoadMate 1470 is that its huge 4.7″ screen. Compared to the usual 3.5″ and 4.3″ screens, 1470 is a behemoth. Another thing about the RoadMate series in general is the improved interface which includes quickspell, and exit POIs.

Here are some unlikeable remarks from the review:

  • The font for distance to next turn (on the left side of the top bar) is smaller than other numbers displayed on the screen, making it more difficult to pick out this critical number at a glance

  • The bottom of the unit power cord attachment is a bit of a pain; it can only be connected after sliding the unit into the mount

  • I wish the RoadMate showed the speed limit, but you’ll have to step up to the Maestro line for this feature.

Ecco Keychain GPS Unit Cures Parked Car Amnesia

Ecco Keychain GPS Unit Cures Parked Car Amnesia

If you are anything like me, remembering where you parked your car in a crowded lot requires entirely too much brainpower. The Ecco GPS can help you with that problem in a keychain-sized unit.

Keep in mind that the Ecco does not work like a traditional GPS—instead of finding new locations, it is designed to lead you back to one of three stored locations. So, if you are a Disney World and you want to keep tabs on where you parked, your location can be stored onto the device and used later to lead you back.

The Ecco only has an effective range of 10 miles and an accuracy of 32 feet, but it could come in handy to fill in the gaps for people who have no plans to buy a GPS-enabled phone.

Thinkware's iNAVI ES300 navigator reeks of win

Thinkware's iNAVI ES300 navigator reeks of win

We can't quite figure it out, but it seems the navigation makers in North America just can't muster the courage to develop something such as this for our market. We could very well be wrong here, but seriously, is there no pent-up demand for a TV tuning GPS system with a spacious 7-inch display here in the US / Canada / Mexico? Anywho, the South Koreans are scoring once more with the downright beautiful Thinkware iNAVI ES300, which arrives with a sweet side-panel control system, integrated battery, 2GB / 4GB / 8GB of internal storage, 3D maps and a DMB tuner. Oh, and this is considered 'low-end' by its standards. Those in the right places can snag one soon for ₩329,000 ($263), ₩379,000 ($303) or ₩429,000 ($343) from least capacious to most.
