Folks living in Europe will be able to get their hands on a trio of new Navman GPS navigation systems - namely the Navman 575, Navman 475 and Navman 470. All three will rely on TomTom's licensed their IQ Routes technology, alongside Mio's own LearnMe feature that lets the device pick up which are your favorite routes. The Navman 470 and 475 are pretty similar hardware-wise, coming with a 4.3? display while the Navman 575 has a more generous 4.7? touchscreen display. Other features comprise of a one year free real time traffic and safety camera information, SiRFStar InstantFix and Google Send-to-GPS. You can expect to fork out £99 for the Navman 470, albeit it comes with Western European maps only this May. As for the Navman 575, it will retail for £149.99 a pop.

Garmin G3X

Garmin just announced that they would include Synthetic Vision in their G3X. We’re not really sure what the heck Synthetic Vision does or what this G3X glass cockpit is capable of but it really sets Garmin apart from other names like TomTom, Mio, etc.

Aviation products has been a part of Garmin’s lineup since the 90’s and brings in a good chunk of their income. And do not forget their marine GPS units as well. In addition they have a really wide range of road GPS navigation units, offer one of the best solutions for athletes (even golfers), great handhelds for those who like outdoors, and, and, there’s that nuvifone.

We always give them a hard time for being kind of expensive with their nuvi’s or zumo’s but it is not easy being a company that offers products that cost between $100 to $10000.

Keep up the good work guys. I hope you sell a lot of these G3X things.

QStarz SR-Q2100

QStarz keep coming out with really decent and functional handheld GPS devices. One of these is the QStarz SR-Q2100.

They say this is a ‘10-in-1″ product and list the following:

  • Track Logger

  • Cycle Computer

  • Location Finder

  • Digital Compass

  • Route Guider

  • IPX-7 waterproof

  • E-Temperature

  • QPlanner software for route pre-planning

  • QSports software for health management

  • QTravel software for travel logging and geotagging

We don’t really think all of these items count as a separate feature but nonetheless this is a multifunctional device. Even just the cycle computer along with route planner is quite impressive. But of course there’s more. Such as the electronic compass, location finder, or the E-Temperature feature. Don’t ask us how that works, for we have no idea.

Here are some more detailed hardware features for the QStarz SR-2100:

  • Large LCD display with backlight support : 38 x 32mm 1.8’ for instant GPS information

  • Multi-function handheld GPS with Bike mode / Waypoint mode / Route mode

  • Sport GPS mode can display info as Odometer/Distance/Current Speed/Max Speed/Average Speed/Azimuth/Temperature/Calories/8-directional compass/Total Time/Current time.

  • Location Back mode can mark 4 waypoints (A/B/C/D point) - the estimate straight line distance measuring of the location back points

  • Route Plan mode can support 1 route with 99 turn points, which can advise remaining distance/direction/time to target point

  • Support pre-loading 4 Location Back points and pre-planning 99 turn points of route

  • Track Log up to 42,496 waypoints

  • Smart power saving and support 25 hours usage (22hrs with backlight)

  • Adopts latest GPS chipset with high sensitivity -159dBm

  • Excellent performance - Cold/Warm/Hot start time: 42/38/1 sec. (average)

  • Time zone and distance/speed unit adjustable

Mio iPhone/iPod touch car kit is identical to Magellan’s

We just came across this French site that claims they’ll exclusively be offering the Mio iPhone/iPod Touch car kit which looks identical to Magellan’s car kit which we actually reviewed a short while ago. We won’t be surprised if this is actually the case - since MiTAC Mio bought off Magellan couple of years ago and apparently the Euro version of this GPS embedded car kit will be under Mio brand name.

The source says Mio will soon announce its Car Kit for iPhone which integrates its own GPS chip to get a better GPS reception for more accurate navigation then iPhone 3G alone. The Car Kit will obviously compatible with the iPod to the extent that it integrates its own GPS chip and a powerful speaker for voice guidance and may be in portrait or landscape position. The assembly will be possible either on the windshield or directly on the dashboard.

The price normally will be around 100 € to compete with TomTom Car Kit.

However there will be no navigation software for iPhone and iPod Touch provided by Mio Car Kit.

The launch is scheduled for mid May 2010.

Magellan RoadMate 3065

Magellan RoadMate 3065 must be coming out shortly in the U.S. since it just made it through FCC. One of the biggest features that puts RoadMate 3065 ahead of the others is that it can ‘wake up’ at a preset time to download traffic information for you so you can make a more advised decision at the beginning of your trip rather than during.

However it sounds like this is going to be a premium feature yet we still don’t know how much it will cost or how it will download traffic data. What do you think? 3G or WiFi? - I mean your garage is possibly is in your home WiFi range - that could work most of the time…

Logic Instrument FieldBook is rugged and does GPS

Logic Instrument FieldBook is rugged and does GPS

Logic Instrument just introduced FieldBook, a ruggedized GPS capable handheld computer with Windows OS. It is actually very versatile allowing for various configurations such as WiFi, Bluetooth, web-cam, RS232 port, RFID, barcode scanner, video input, and more. There are 15 different configurations of such I/O ports and expansion slots.

Also FieldBook can pretty much take anything you can throw at it including itself - it can survive a 4 foot drop and operates from -20C to +50C in rain or dust-storms making this device MIL-STD810G compliant.

The barebones FieldBook comes with a 7″ sunlight readable 1024x600 px WVGA display with resistive glovetouch screen, a 1.6GHz Atom CPU with 2GB RAM and even a G-Sensor with a protected 120GB HDD. It has a relatively big 2500 mAh hot swappable battery that can last up to 5 hours which can be powered with 115/230V AC or any wide range 10-30 VDC adapter.

We’re guessing this would cost at least $2000 - but do not worry. It is not really for end-consumers like you and I - it is mostly for the DoD just guessing from the specs.
