Pioneer in UK just announced a new in-dash GPS navigation + entertainment system called Pioneer NavGate AVIC-F9110BT. The unit is specifically designed for VW, Skoda and Seat vehicles.

AVIC-F9110BT has a high-resolution 5.8-inch WVGA touch screen, 2GB internal memory that stores maps of 44 European countries by TeleAtlas, and also includes 1.7million Points-of-Interests (POIs). The device has text-to-speech feature; not only for street names but even for traffic events that it receives via the TMC receiver.

Some multimedia features include the ability to watch videos from DVDs, CDs, SD cards, USB devices, control your iPod or iPhone using a special cable, and support for various audio formats. It also does bluetooth so you can relay phone conversations to your car’s stereo.

Another neat feature is the ability to customize the POI database from Google Maps using the SD card and their NavGate Feeds application.

Satellite Navigation for elderly shoppers to find their way around in supermarkets

Have you ever got lost in a really big size supermarket and wished you had a GPS to find your way around. Well scientists are working on a device which works like a car navigation system that will help elderly and physically challenged people in supermarkets. Oh! I guess I forgot to mention that you should be old enough for such a device. This is a part of government-funded research at three centers, mainly Newcastle, Aberdeen and Nottingham universities. The sat nav shopping device more likely will be used as a global positioning system and the latest mobile phone coordinates. Newcastle University is already testing a gadget for dementia patients so that they can be tracked if they lose their way. Let’s hope they get something like that for us youngsters too so we don’t have to remember so many things!

Panasonic CN-MP200 and CN-MP100

cn_mp200

Panasonic CN-MP200 and CN-MP100 are two new portable GPS navigation systems for the Japanese market. As with everything in Japan, CN-MP200 can show digital TV channels thanks to its 1Seg TV tuner.

There isn’t anything too exciting about these GPS navigation systems other than the fact that they allow two way communication between the device and Google Maps for sharing POIs.

Some hardware specs and features include 5″ touchscreen, SD card slot, VICS, JPEG, and DIGA support… via

NAVIGON 7210

navigon-7210

NAVIGON 7210 seems like the European version of NAVIGON 7300T we have here in the U.S.

It has the 3D landmark view, voice address entry, reality view, lane assistance, TMC traffic updates, bluetooth, text-to-speech and something we haven’t seen before: ‘curve warner’ which warns you ahead of dangerous curves.

Some hardware specs of NAVIGON 7210 are the 4.3″ 16:9 format touch screen, SiRF Titan + Instant Fix II GPS receiver, 2GB flash ROM, 600 MHz processor, 1600 mAh Li-Ion (nice!), and maps of 40 European countries pre-installed.

GPS navigation system on Nintendo DS

nintendo-ds-gps-ranger

Sony PSP GPS navigation system has been around for a while but a GPS navigation system for Nintendo DS is new to us.

Fab Chain of China has just come out with a product called Ranger that does just that: GPS navigation for NDS. It uses Google Maps (which raises some questions) can do 2D, fake-3D map rendering, uses a U-Blox GPS receiver, and can connect to other devices such as laptops and PDA’s too.

Ranger has its own rechargeable battery so it won’t waste your consoles juice, and will charge through USB.

No word on availability or pricing just yet - but do check it out for yourself.

Garmin Nuvi 1490T Announced

Garmin decided to update its nüvi GPS device range with its latest high end model - the 1490T. This is one behemoth (at least by Garmin standards) as it comes with the following :-

  • 5' touchscreen display

  • Pedestrian GPS mode

  • Free lifetime traffic updates (we like!)

  • Multi-route prediction with lane guidance

  • ecoRoutes for fuel-efficient journeys

  • Bluetooth connectivity

You can pick up the Garmin nuvi 1490T this July for $500 a pop, while those who tend to make their way around cities and towns on foot might want to pony up another $15 or so for CityXplorer maps that offer improved detail when on foot.
