Maestro 5340 Elite - Now Expected in July

Maestro5340_Google_RT_Hi499x436.jpg

For those of you who couldn't wait to sink $1200 into a super widescreen (5-inch), connected GPS from Magellan, well you are going to have to wait a while longer. The unit that was originally announced back at CES 208 in January and was slated for a Q1 2008 launch isn't happening (yea, no kidding, it's already Q2!!! I know). We now see some confirmation as Tiger GPS who has been taking pre-orders for the advanced unit, is now saying 'MAGELLAN IS NOW PROJECTED TO RELEASE THIS PRODUCT IN JULY 2008'.

Should be interesting to see this hit the market, as they have teamed up with Google to provide search capabilities, and the unit will deliver some more sophisticated connectedness to provide better POI search, as well as traffic and gas prices. The unit will also have historical average speeds to make it a more complete traffic solution. Its Bluetooth handsfree capabilities comes with a dual microphone with noise canceling technology to help make for crisper conversations.

Archos PMP to Have GPS

archos_606_sfr_3g.jpg

French PMP manufacturer Archos is up to something big next week, April 23. According to T3, new PMPs from the company will feature GPS. Archos’s plan is to ‘direct you to your destination of choice in Europe, the USA or even China, and you can then pass the media player to the back of the car to let the kids entertain themselves with hours of movies, music and internet.’ This could be the next generation (Gen-6) Archos we’ve been waiting for. Gen-5 was announced last September, which was over 6 months ago. Archos 606 and 706 are way overdue. To tell the truth, we’d wait a little while longer for an Archos PMP with WiFi, GPS and 3G.

m.imove 3218 and m.imove 4228

MyGuide seems to be revamping their product line these days. After M.i.motion3318, M.i.motion4328 and M.i.more4338, the two new additions to their entry level GPS navigation systems are the m.imove 3218 and m.imove 4228.

m.imove 3218 is the smaller of the two with a 3.5″ screen. m.imove 4228 boasts a 4.3″ screen and a stronger 1450mAh battery as opposed to 1050mAh.

The rest of the of features are identical. Both have text-to-speech function, come with 2.1 million points of interests, can show elevations in 3D, and have lane assistance. As far as hardware and OS nothing too exciting: 372Mhz CPU, 512 MB Flash Memory, 64 MB RAM, 30 channel GPS and Windows CE 5.0.

The navigation software is the latest MyGuide 8.0 and in addition to advanced 3D renderings it also can warn the user when above the posted speed limit. There’s also the SDVC: volume of voice instructions will increase/decrease depending on speed of car.

We’re not sure where you can pick one up though. MyGuide seems to be popular in Eastern Europe more than anywhere else.

Hands-On: The SPOT Satellite Messenger

Hands-On: The SPOT Satellite Messenger

SPOT_Intro.jpgEveryone remembers the terrible stories on the news a few years ago, of climbers and hikers lost in the wilderness and the desperate search to find them before the unthinkable happened. If you love the outdoors, a situation like that could be your worst nightmare.

A number of products have appeared to help you survive the elements should you wind up in a bad position. The SPOT Satellite Messenger is one of those products, and while I didn't take it to the top of a mountain, it certainly proved itself useful on more than one occasion.

The SPOT looks like a big orange walky-talky; it's light, it fits in the palm of your hand, and it is very orange. The thick black plastic buttons and grips on the side add to its rugged feel. The AA batteries required for the device to work are included in the package, along with a user guide to help you get used to it.

Because the SPOT is a satellite messenger, it must acquire a signal before you can really start using it; you can't turn it on and expect it to work. You need to leave it out in the open (or at least somewhere with skyward view) for a good 10 to 20 minutes before it's able to send messages. Its size and shape do make it obvious that the SPOT is a device designed for safety--the bright-orange exterior is impossible to mistake, and the fact that there are only four buttons (on/off, check-in, help, and 911) make the device incredibly simple to use, even in an emergency.

SPOT - Message Config

The SPOT device is only half of the equation. The other half is your SPOT profile, which you can manage from any computer with Web access. You get an ID number with your SPOT, and with it you can go to the company's Web site, log in, register your device, and configure your alerts. The SPOT can send three different types of messages: check-in messages, help requests, and emergency/911 messages. Each message is sent with information to help find your location, including your latitude and longitude, your device number, the nearest town to your location and how far away it is, and a link to a Google Map with your position indicated on the map.

SPOT - Messages

Check-in messages are just over 100 characters and can be sent to any e-mail address or mobile device. Type in the message you want sent when you check in from the trail, and add your e-mail address and telephone number (the service supports most major U.S. and international cellular carriers). Once you save your settings, each time you press the check-in button on the SPOT, your message will be e-mailed to the address you specified and sent via SMS to the mobile number you provided. You can always visit the SPOT Web site to see any messages the SPOT device has sent, whether they're messages for help, emergency messages, check-in messages, or even the test messages that the device sends to verify its connection to the satellite network.

Help messages are similar to check-in messages; they're designed for when you need assistance but may not want to call emergency services--for example, if your tire is flat and you're in the middle of nowhere, or if you're lost but you know you're not terribly far from civilization. The help message can also be customized and send to the same or a different e-mail address or mobile number. Finally, the emergency/911 button sends a message directly to SPOT's emergency service provider. The provider contacts fire and rescue personnel in your vicinity and provides them with your most recent coordinates so they can find you.

SPOT - Google Map

I carried a SPOT messenger with me for several months, and while I thankfully was never faced with a life threatening situation where I had to use the SPOT, it definitely came in handy for a number of other things; I could see how people who may not be the outdoorsy types may find the SPOT useful. The device obviously is geared towards hikers, bikers, campers, and others who may be away from towns and cities for long periods of time, but the SPOT could also be useful for parents or families who are separating for vacations or long trips and want to be able to check in with one another without having to call or e-mail.

A colleague recently left on a long biking trip with a dozen other people, so while his safety is assured, his family may not be able to reach him, because he won't have a cellular signal. The SPOT could give him a device with one button to check in with them nightly to let them know that he's doing well and he's made progress along his planed route. But if something horrible did happen, the SPOT could save his life.

SPOT - Les Stroud

During my time with the SPOT, I used it periodically from my office and on my commute to work to see how quickly it would send a message with my exact position. In each case the SPOT was accurate enough that it would be easy to find me, and the pointer on the Google map was only a few meters from my actual location. The device is reliable enough that the service has been endorsed by 'Survivorman' Les Stroud of Discovery Channel fame, who regularly strands himself in deserted locations with only his cameras and his wits to guide him to safety.

The SPOT device itself costs $169.99, and an annual subscription to the satellite tracking service is $99.99 per year. You can add such features to your tracking service as progress monitoring and search-and-rescue benefits for an additional cost.

Mio Moov 200 review

moov200.jpg

Mio’s new lineup ‘Moov’ was recently announced and now we have a review for Mio Moov 200.

The new Moov devices run on an in-house navigation software developed by using Navman technology, a GPS company Mio bought out last year. As a result, user interface on Mio devices has changed quite a bit. Although the reviewer likes some of the differences, such as Moov’s text-to-speech conversion, multi-segment routing, and multiple language support, it looks like Mio has taken a step backward when it comes to presenting POIs.

Like Mio’s previous entry-level product, the DigiWalker C220, the Moov 200 features a 3.5-million-entry POI database, but the way it handles POIs is disappointing. You can search for POIs by name or by city/area, or search for nearby POIs by category (parks, restaurants, and such). By contrast, all three of the DigiWalker devices offer more search choices, so it’s easier to find your POI. Additionally, when you search by name with the Moov 200, results are presented alphabetically by city name rather than by distance, which isn’t as useful. And there aren’t any POI subcategories, so although I could search for nearby restaurants, I couldn’t specify Italian or Chinese.

However not doing so well in terms of POI does not make Moov 200 a bad product. Priced under $200 this GPS navigation system still adds features that are not available in closely priced competitors - such as the text to speech feature and multi segment routing.

TomTom GO 930 gets reviewed

The fine folks at GPS review have gotten their hands on the new TomTom GO 930, a followup to the GO 720 -- TomTom's previous flagship device. As far as looks go, the 930 is pretty much a 720 in shiny black clothing, so the review concentrates on the new features included like Active Lane Guidance, static intersection images and IQ routes. Nothing's going to blow you away if you already have a 720, but the lane guidance should help with that all-important 'which lane should I get in?' conundrum, while IQ routes has significantly improved route time estimations. Intersection images were too few and far between to be much help, but overall this is a decent improvement to an already impressively-reviewed device.

Nextar I4-BC, a GPS and Reversing Camera System Combo [GPS]

Nextar's I4-BC device wraps up a widescreen GPS system and one of those neat reversing cameras in one gizmo. Great: more family rows averted, with no getting lost en route and no backing into the gatepost as you leave. You hook up the camera on your vehicle, and when you start backing up its display auto-switches from navigation to the rear view, with a range up to 13 feet. Its got all the standard GPS functions, a 4.3-inch widescreen, text-to-speech for street name instructions and an SD card for MP3 playing. Of course, systems like this are built-in to some cars, but this is not a bad little combo for your older vehicle. Costs $499.95.

Both versions, as well as LT-40 GPS receiver support UMPC’s says DeLorme which is nothing more than saying ‘this camera supports YouTube’.

However there are some real new features one of which being the NavMode option. NavMode has a more sleek GUI and offers a 3D view. In addition, the LT-40 has something called a ConstantLock Signal Retention where signals as weak as -159dBm are routinely acquired and maintained without sacrificing positional accuracy while STMicroelectronics’ and DeLorme’s Kalman filtering maintains its fix even amid tall buildings, and in high radio frequency (RF) areas.
