Rightway Spotter, Tony Stewart Edition GPS

We’ve already talked about their Dale Earnhardt version of their GPS navigation system. This time people at Transplant just announced Tony Stewart Edition featuring NASCAR Sprint Cup series driver.

There’s isn’t much creativity here. It’s just a good old GPS navigation system bringing CoPilot’s navigation engine together with some NASCAR licensing to make product appeal to some motorsport fans - not that there’s anything wrong with that.

With this SPOTTER you can either be the Office Depot or Old Spice car, and have Tony’s voice guide to your destination.

Here are some more features:

  • CoPilot ClearTurn™ & Lane Assist for navigating complex interchanges on major highways

  • Turn-by-turn full street name voice guidance (not available in Tony Stewart’s voice)

  • Automatic route calculation and re-calculation

  • Clear 2D, 3D & Driver Safety map views

  • English, French, Spanish language options

  • Automatic day/night mode

  • Destination entry by zip code, city, street or intersection

  • Multi-stop planning with route optimization

It is going to sell for $180 and you can pick it up from here.

Garmin Nuvi 295W

Garmin just came out with a brand new GPS navigation system this last week called Garmin Nuvi 295W. It is already available for $280 from Garmin website. 295W is a very slim looking GPS navigation system that makes you want to hold it up to your face and make a phone call. But you can’t. Even though it very much looks like a smartphone it is not but packs most of their features.

First and foremost you’ve got the WiFi connectivity which lets you surf the net with its browser and also you can do webmail and POP3 and IMAP, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF attachments. You can also do Google Local Search.

Then you have the dual orientation 3.5″ glass touchscreen, a decent 3MP camera with geotagging feature, audio player, and a 2.5mm headphone jack.

Here are a couple of videos:

Onda VP30 and VP50 w/ GPS

onda-vp-30

Onda have a 6-inch 800x480 VP50 and a 5-inch VP30, both entering the market in the 4GB storage flavour, and both featuring GPS functionality, which is pretty cool I suppose. Both feature a 3D virtual map, which certainly looks snazzy in the above pictured photograph. Am not totally sure about the extent of functionality of the map, but needless to say this sort of thing isn’t that common in PMPs.

TomTom XXL 550

Very similar to the TomTom XL350 we talked about moments ago TomTom also announced TomTom XXL 550. Almost all specs are identical except of course the screen size. XXL 550 moves you from a 4.3″ to a 5″ screen.

Naming convention also stays the same. You’ve got XXL 550M and XXL 550TM for free map updates, and XXL 550 T, XXL 550 TM gets Lifetime Traffic Updates.

How much for a bigger screen? TomTom XXL 550 will cost $200 and the one time maps, and traffic subscription will cost $30.

AV8OR

There aren’t too many companies dealing with aviation GPS units out there. One of them is Garmin of course. The other one we see every now and then is the AV8OR. They recently had one of their units make it through FCC regulations though it doesn’t look much different than the Bendix/King AV8OR from Honeywell we talked about two years ago. Maybe they updated the hardware or just changed the software to make it suitable for helicopters…

Either way the AV8OR seems like a very capable unit. It can provide real time satellite weather data from NEXRAD and others , gives you airport information with a single tap, lets you plan flights, gives you a traffic avoidance option, and a lot more.

If all of that is not enough it will even work in your vehicle as a regular GPS navigation system. It costs around $600 on various online retailers. Here are some of the specs:

  • 4.3″ Touch Screen LCD, 480 x 272 Pixels

  • 800 mAh battery (1600 mAh optional)

  • On-screen keyboard

  • quick database updates or flight updates can be transferred from a PC

  • Upload logged flights to your home PC for display on programs such as Google Earth

  • 4 GB SD card comes with aviation and automotive databases for either North America/Canada or Europe

  • Automotive database includes more than 10 million Points of Interest (POI) in the U.S. and 2 million POIs in Canada

  • dual Bluetooth interfaces for alternate devices such as a cell phone, XM weather receiver, or alternate GPS Receiver
