Viliv S5 with StreetDeck II

Viliv S5 with StreetDeck II

People at StreetDeck took the Windows XP based Viliv S5 and installed their user interface on it. S5 has built-in GPS, Wi-Fi, USB port, mini USB, monitor port, resistive touch screen.

It comes with a suction cup window mount which you can see in the video below, and of course a car charger as well. The video demos the GPS navigation, XM radio, and other general features of their StreetDeck II user interface.

Streetdeck swears this is the best UMPC as far as delivering GPS navigation features be it the really fast resume time, or the sensitive touch screen. Speakers are also very good which can let you listen to music while getting driving directions. It is an XP based PC after all.

Viliv S5 w/ GPS, car kit, and StreetDeck II costs about $700. It will be ready soon after March.

NAVIGON 7300T

navigon-7300t

NAVIGON 7300T was the highlight of the day from Navigon. NAVIGON 7300T is higher end GPS navigation system whereas 4300T max and 3300 max were mid and low range devices.

NAVIGON 7300T has a wide range of features including Rand McNally scenic routes, preloaded maps of both U.S. and Canada, real time traffic updates for the life of the product, lane assistant, bluetooth phone pairing, 3D panaroma and landmark views, and another important one: voice address entry.

NAVIGON 7300T will be available second quarter of this year for $400. A comparable Garmin is at least $600.

NAVIGON 4300T max

navigon_4300t

Navigon just today announced their latest ‘NAVIGON 4300T max‘; a GPS navigation system that can learn from your driving habits and suggest a route accordingly. The new feature is called MyRoutes and provides the driver with up to 3 different routes to choose from considering speed limits, construction and traffic as you’re driving. And you’ll have ETA’s for all three.

However the software has a bit more intelligent than just throwing out three different routes at you. NAVIGON 4300T max will also save your individual driving data so it can recommend you the best route based on your history, while factoring in day of the week, and the time of the day. Clearly something Dash Express tried before they disappeared to target everyday commuters. We’ll see if Navigon can get people driving to and from work to buy their GPS navigation system.

Navigon 4300T max sells for $280. Hardware specs include a 4.3″ touchscreen interface, SiRF Atlas IV 500 MHz processor, integrated traffic receiver and antenna, Bluetooth, SiRF GRF3i+ GPS chip plus InstantFix II, 2 hour non-removable 1300 mAh li-ion battery, and a Micro SD card slot.

GETAC’s rugged PDA looks like you could drop it in a volcano

getac_ps535f-lo-res1I’m a big fan of ruggedized items. Although PDAs (as opposed to smartphones) are relatively rare these days, there’s still a large need for them in certain scientific and professional pursuits. Ruggedized PDAs even more so, as chances are you’re not going for a two-month expedition to your grandma’s house. I’m sure there are plenty of surveyors, mappers, science guys and secret agents that would love this thing in all its multi-capable glory.

The PS535 is a sort of combination hardcore GPS unit and smartphone, and sports an altimeter and compass in addition to the positioning system. Its 533MHz Samsung 2450 processor and 128MB of RAM put it squarely in power handheld territory, and it’s got 2 gigs of onboard storage (no word on expandability). It runs Windows Mobile 6.1, which I think is a prerequisite for pros since there are lots of specialized apps that only work with WinMo. Lastly but certainly not least is a sunlight-readable 3.5″ touchscreen at 640x480. Of course, it does wi-fi and Bluetooth as well.

If I were going on a trip to the Lost World, or tracking Grizzlies in Alaska, I’d definitely be bringing one of these suckers along.

GPS chartplotting with 955c from Humminbird

GPS chartplotting with 955c from Humminbird

955c

We realize we don’t pay enough attention to marine GPS units so we’ll try to make up for it by talking about the GPS chartplotting device 955c from Humminbird. It has a price tag of $1,200 but it’ll probably pay for itself with all that fish you’ll catch.

Chartplotter 955C has a nicely sized 8″ color display with 480x800 resolution in a 16:9 format. It comes with UniMap built-in, and it is Navionics compatible, with 3D chart support. It can hook up to bunch of other units with with various network Modules such as the WeatherSense, CannonLink, and InterLink.

As far as the GPS receiver it can track 16 satellites at once and that should be plenty since you’ll almost never be under thick tree canopy or tall buildings blocking your view (ok maybe some big dark clouds). It allows for trackplotting and chartplotting, can report your GPS Speed and supports Navionics Platinum which is an optional add on.
