Cobra 5550 PRO

Cobra just today announced a new GPS navigation system called Cobra 5550 PRO, that is designed for truckers or any other professional driver with its 5″ screen. The new 5550 is very similar to Cobra 7750 Platinum but offers enhanced graphics, junction view with lane assistance, state mileage log, and hours-of-service log, and ‘last-mile routing’ which they claim is best in industry with unmatched road coverage on secondary highways.

Other features that target this market include distances to weigh stations, travel centers, rest areas and mile markers. Cobra 5550 PRO even has State Mileage Log feature to keep track of distance covered within a state for IFTA reporting and an Hours-of-Service timer that makes it easier than ever for drivers to track their On-Duty, Off-Duty, and Driving Time.

In addition drivers with Cobra 5550 PRO will get 3 months of unlimited downloads from Cobra’s exclusive AURA Camera & Driving Hazard Database, which alerts drivers to the locations of fixed speed and red-light cameras, dangerous intersections, and known speed traps.

Wait until April this year to get your hands on one of these. It will cost you $350.

Cobra 7700 PRO

cobra-7700-pro

Cobra has been very quiet recently - but that doesn’t mean they forgot about the professional drivers out there. They just recently announced 7700 PRO, a GPS navigation and routing tool specifically designed to the needs of the professional driver. It utilizes a lot of truck-specific data that helps them optimize routes and arrive at destinations in the most efficient and economical way possible.

The 7700 PRO has a huge 7″ touch screen in 16:9 aspect ratio, and features text-to-speech guidance with loud turn-by-turn direction. Your purchase will include 3 months of unlimited downloads from Cobra’s AURA Camera & Driving Hazard Database, which alerts drivers to the locations of fixed speed and red-light cameras, dangerous intersections and known speed traps. An extra smart feature is you can always switch the Cobra 7700 to run in ‘car’ mode - so drivers can take it with them in their personal vehicles.

With Cobra 7700 PRO they partnered with ProMiles and TruckDown Info International, Inc. to include more than 33000 truck-specific points of interest (POIs) such as routable travel center locations, detailed amenity information, fueling stations, restaurants, heavy duty towing, truck and trailer repair shops, truck-friendly hotels and weigh scales, plus the usual 12 million standard POIs.

As you’d normally expect from other truck specific GPS navigation system the 7700 PRO can calculate your route based on the vehicle’s height, width and weight and provides complete coverage data including STAA National Highway Network and Access Roads; National Bridge Inventory List; National HazMat Route Registry; and detailed truck data for the lower 48 States and Canada.

The Cobra 7700 PRO will go for $580 when it comes out in October.

Cobra SL3 GPS radar detector

cobra-SL3

The new Cobra SL3 is a standalone GPS enabled radar detector that warns drivers about thousands of driving threats that include red lights, speed cameras and caution areas.

For the location of these threats Cobra SL3 relies on the AURA database, and uses various colored LEDs and beeps and tones to nag the driver about that speed camera on your way to work. It is smart enough to time the warning based on your speed so you always have enough time to react whether it is to slow down, cover your face, or eject from your seat.

The purchase will you rights to access the AURA database 24/7 so you can always get the latest locations stored on your Cobra SL3.

Another cool feature with this GPS enabled radar detector is that you can also add up to 1000 locations as a threat (such as common hideout place for cops) to ‘customize’ the SL3 to your needs.

Current introductory price for Cobra SL3 is $100. That’s less than the price of one single traffic citation.

My first radar detector only had a row of green and red lights and beeped when you got close to being nailed by a radar gun--awfully quaint in comparison to all that Cobra's 2009 radar devices can do. There are six new units ...

Cobra5000.jpg

Cobra is expected to unveil their Cobra NavOne 5000 at CES, which was curiously pre-announced last year at CES 2007. The NavOne is an interesting unit with a larger 5.0-inch screen - super sized, and it also comes with a verified red light and speed camera database. With the extra size screen comes some extra sized maps and some larger fonts so that people who mount their GPS units farther away, will be able to see it better.

It comes with TeleAtlas Maps of the US and Canada, as well as Text to Speech, 7.6 million POI and the option to show any of the about 600 branded icons on the screen as you drive down the road. The unit also has an optional traffic receiver and the ability to offer you two alternate routes should you hit traffic.
