Medion’s new off-road GPS navigation systems

After their exclusive agreement with the National Geographic Institute (IGN) to use the ‘IGN Evadeo’ trademark, German brand Medion introduced its first GPS Evadeo intended for off-roading as well as for use on motorcycles.

Medion has introduced 3 new GPS navigation systems: the Evadeo M3220, M3320 and M3320a Premium. They all have a 3.5″ touch screen with 240x320 pixels resolution (QVGA).

The new Medion Evadeo GPS navigation systems are IPX7 standard meaning they can be submerged up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes - not that you are going to test this….

They all have a 1800mAh battery, 2GB of internal memory and a MicroSD card slot. There’s also bluetooth but it’s not for taking calls on your phone, it is only for a headset for the voice guidance.

The M3320 and Premium M3320a also incorporate an accelerometer, a compass, an altimeter and a barometer. Unlike previous Evadeo series which had a program used for both car navigation and off road navigation, Medion now has chosen a different approach. For car navigation, it will be the GoPal software. For off-road navigation, Medion software retains the excellent road TwoNav Editor CompeGPS. This software was already present in previous Evadeo and is also found in the GPS off-road TwoNav Adventura.

The M3220 comes with the road map of France, while the M3320 and M3320a Premium come with the road map of 23 countries in Europe; all supplied by Navteq.

Terrain maps are of course provided by IGN. All of the three new GPS navigation systems come with GPS mapping at 1/100,000th of the whole of metropolitan France, integrating GR (Trails) and the contour. It can therefore be used free of charge in any field.

These GPS Medion Evadeo M3220, M3320 and M3320a Premium should be available from mid-May at no extra charge of 279 €, 329 € and 349 €…

MEDION GoPal P4445 is quite new in Europe. It offers an unusual flat screen measuring 4.7″, maps of Europe (Q4/2008), Traffic Message Channel receiver, 2GB internal memory, text-to-Speech, MP3 player, Bluetooth, and even a fingerprint sensor. The GPS receiver is SiRF starIII which comes with SiRFInstantFixII. All the heavy weight is lifted by the Samsung 400 MHz processor.

What makes Medion GoPal 4445 more high-end than most other devices out there is the voice commands capability. In order to keep your hands on the wheel, the GPS navigation system can be controlled easily by voice whether it is address input, volume or traffic information - the device understands a variety of commands.

We haven’t been talking about Medion for a while now, but no worries - they’re still alive and kicking. At the past IFA 2009 which ended very recently they announced their new model MEDION GoPal P4635. The new GoPal P4635 model has many premium features such as voice control, SiRFInstantFixll technology and TMC, which collects information from both intelligent transport services as well as a dynamic information service. There’s an integrated GSM module that receives this constant and real-time information on recent changes in the traffic, parking situation, gas prices and the weather. MEDION GoPal P4635 also has the new navigation MEDION GoPal 5 GPS navigation system software with a variety of safety-enhancing and practical additional functions.

The traffic information is relayed from Navteq Traffic which comes from various sources such as regional data centers and about 5,000 inductive loops on freeways. Also 4000 infrared detectors on motorway bridges as well as data of so-called floating cars from a fleet of over 50,000 vehicles are involved. Compared with the conventional TMC reception on FM this is considered much more information. With the new MEDION GoPal P4635, the user is therefore given a detailed overview of the entire traffic situation.

Starting September 2009, the MEDION GoPal P4635 will be available for about 350 euros. The purchase price includes one year of GSM service and after that you can get access for EUR 4.95 a month, or 49.95 per year.

Medion continues to work on their market share in Europe by releasing bunch of new GPS navigation systems. The latest is MEDION GoPal P5430.

With the new GoPal P5430 Medion is emphasizing the extra large screen that measures 5″ diagonally. The rest of the features are also medium to high end. There’s even a finger print sensor. It uses the SiRF InstantFix II GPS receiver which reduces the time to first fix by guessing where those satellites might be.

MEDION GoPal P5430 comes with maps Western and Eastern Europe; provided by Navteq, and an integrated TMC traffic antenna to help you stay out the mess. Other features include:

It's been a nice little while since we've seen any new navigators from Medion, but the outfit's hitting back with its relatively forgettable GoPal P5430. The European PND sports a 5-inch touchscreen display, integrated TMC antenna, fingerprint sensor, text-to-speech functionality, an inbuilt FM transmitter and pre-installed NAVTEQ maps of Western and Eastern Europe. Like we said, forgettable -- but you should know it's priced at £175 ($269) just in case you're tempted.

Europeans will be glad to learn that Medion has announced its Medion E3212, a GPS that costs about 120 Euros (wouldn’t that be cheap if the dollar was not in the toilets?). It is loaded with GoPal 4.0, the software from the same company. It has a 3.5’ display and is one of the cheapest GPS that has real-time traffic updates.

Medion just introduced world’s first GPS navigation system with a finger print scanner that ensures only intended users can activate the device.

Called GoPal P4425, the device features - in addition to GPS navigation - bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition and text-to-speech, RDS-TMC traffic receiver, and an FM transmitter that lets drivers use their car’s audio system for voice guidance. MEDION’s GoPal P4425 is only available in select European countries and the price is not announced yet.

GoPal P4425 has a 4.3″ screen, a slim body that’s only 17mm in depth, and 3D rendering of maps that even includes some scenery in the horizon.

Given that SatNav systems are one of the hottest items to steal these days, Medion's latest GoPal might go some way to redress the balance. Its P4425 model boasts fingerprint recognition for extra security, meaning that not only will thieves be unable to use it, but might find it that little bit harder to find out where you live &mdash unless, of course, your car is parked in your driveway when they break into your motor and steal it.

Just 17 mm thick, the P4425 has voice recognition for certain commands, meaning no more one-handed steering while you thump the SatNav unit as it repeats 'Come off the motorway at the next exit' in its robot voice. There's RDS-TMC antenna for live traffic updates, 1.5GM memory, a 4.2-inch color widescreen and an FM transmitter for so you can get 'Come off the motorway at the next exit' voice guidance piped through your speakers. There's even a pre-loaded database that tells you where all the speed cameras are.

With maps of the UK and the rest of western Europe, the GoPal P4425 is out in the UK in November for £299.99, or around $600. Will this be the shape of SatNav security to come?

European sat nav device maker Medion today announced the arrival of GoPal P4425, a GPS navigation system with 4.3″ touch screen and fingerprint recognition for extra security.

Come to think of it this extra feature may come in very handy in case a serial killer steals your vehicle. You don’t want to lead him to your house when you are stranded in a remote parking lot with your garage door opener and cell phone left in the vehicle.

On more pleasant topics; the extra slim GoPal P4425 measuring only 17mm thick also supports bluetooth hands free calling with voice recognition for certain commands, RDS-TMC antenna for live traffic updates, and an FM transmitter to hear voice guidance through your cars speakers.

It will be available in the UK for £300 in November.

Medion MDPPC 250 review

Medion MDPPC 250 is a PDA that comes with a GPS receiver which is not integrated into the device. This maybe a slight disadvantage considering it will cause extra clutter in your vehicle and you won’t be able to use it on foot since it needs to be plugged into the car charger for power. There are advantages too though: You’ll probably be able to get a quicker satellite fix since you can place right in front of your windshield and also it won’t drain your handheld’s battery.

A UK site just did a review for Medion MDPPC 250 and found to be pleasing if you are on the market for a budget system:

…there are some nice touches to this system, such as voice directions including road numbers. But overall it is let down by a lack of full postcode entry, low volume levels, and a basic POI system. If you’re on a tight budget and don’t mind the weaknesses mentioned above then it is worthy of consideration, especially if you’re only going to use the GPS on an occasional basis. When you consider the cheap price which gives you both a decent spec PDA and basic satellite navigation system it represents good value for money
