We already knew about DeLorme PN-60W with Spot from all the way back in January. Now DeLorme just unveiled EarthMate PN-60; pretty much the same device without two way satellite connectivity.

The new DeLorme EarthMate PN-60 include GPX file support for waypoint, geocache, and track files management; a new elevation profile tool, and new power and display options for better battery life. Also new is the 3.5 GB of on board memory. DeLorme PN-60 is going to sell for $400.

Some other features of the device include icon-based interface, ruggedized, waterproof (IPX-7) body, 32-channel GPS chipset, and dual-core processor. Included in the box is DeLorme Topo North America 9.0 GPS maps and PC software.

Both Delorme PN-60 and Delorme PN-60W are already available on Amazon.

Well, it is touted to be the first first handheld GPS in the world that enables Type & Send text messaging via satellite. Yup, that’s right - it relies on satellite technology to get your messages across, which means you are no longer subject to having to look out for a decent cellphone signal in rural areas. There will be a special interface on the PN-60w that helps it connect wirelessly with the SPOT Satellite Communicator, where the latter was designed exclusively for DeLorme. Both devices were specially designed to be ruggedized and waterproof, making it more suitable than your regular cellphone when it comes to being subjected to the rigors of outdoor use.

With the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator, you are able to type and send text messages to individual email addresses, cellphones, buddy lists, and social networking sites including (but not limited to) Twitter, Facebook, Fire Eagle, SpotAdventures.com, or Geocaching.com. Just in case you get yourself in a tight spot, SOS messages can be sent with your GPS coordinates embedded so that help can arrive in the appropriate manner. We’ve already talked about DeLorme EarthMate PN-40 but now we get the news that it will start shipping Thanksgiving week for $400 and they’ve already started taking orders.

The PN-40 is quite an impressive device with its dual processors, 32 channel GPS receiver, 3 axis electronic compass, and a sensitive barometric altimeter.

If you’re serious a outdoors person this maybe a great investment considering you can download unlimited amount of maps and other data for only $30/year such as aerial imagery, NOAA charts and USGS quads which can supplement the Topo USA’s road data and 3D terrain views.
