HTC Snap (HTC S522)

Remember back in the days when we complained about the ‘new’ Dash not having a GPS receiver? Well, the second generation Dash is here. It is called HTC Snap, it is very similar to Dash, it includes a GPS receiver, and the rest of the specs are far superior as well. So there. No more complaints.

HTC Snap has a 528Mhz Qualcomm processor, runs on WinMo 6.1, has a 2.4″ TFT LCD screen, and supports 3G networks. Something the prev. phone didn’t have was a trackball - so Snap also takes care of that which also includes an enter button.

Other features of HTC Snap include bluetooth 2.0, QWERTY keyboard, a whopping 1500mAh Li-Ion battery, 2MP digital camera with video, and a microSD card slot.

HTC Snap will be available unlocked in the U.S. at 850/1900MHz frequency second quarter of this year and it will be called HTC S522.

HTC Magic

HTC Magic

HTC Magic is the new Android powered phone from HTC for Vodafone in Europe. The biggest difference from T-Mobile’s G1 is that you don’t get a physical keyboard with HTC Magic. HTC Magic will be available starting in the spring first in UK, Spain, Germany and France and in Italy.

HTC Magic will offer the usual Google suite of applications such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Search, Google Talk, YouTube, etc, powered and enhanced with the addition of GPS receiver, accelerometer, and the internal compass. You’ve also got POP3 and IMAP email.

Some other hardware features include Wi-Fi, 3G connection, 3.2MP camera, and the 3.2″ screen with 320x480px resolution.

HTC Touch Cruise (a.k.a Iolite) Announced, Chock-Full of GPSy Goodness

Last week we got a closer look at the HTC Iolite, highlighting a particularly mysterious footprint key at the bottom. Well, today the Touch Cruise has been announced, and we learn that the key is reserved for a little service called Footprints. Footprints allows users to quickly geotag their location with pictures, audio clips, and notes, as well as retrace their path. I’m a huge fan of geotagging, namely because it’s using GPS for something other than driving directions for a change, but the Touch Cruise handles that as well with a bundled car cradle. When locked in, the Touch Cruise changes its UI to something a little more driver-friendly. On the whole, this phone’s got some flavour to it - keep an eye out this Spring.

If you’re a Verizon customer and own a HTC Touch Pro you’re going to enjoy this one. We’ve got some information on how to unlock the GPS capabilities of this device. We already talked about Verizon unlocking the GPS themselves but there’s no reason to wait for them now, is there?

You can find all the detailed instructions here at ppcgeeks which goes something like this:

1. download lllboredlll_VZW_GPS_Fix_v2.cab AND PPST1.46.cab and put on your storage card or any folder on your device

2. install PPST1.46.cab

3. use gsfinder,total commander or File Explorer to navigate to \windows\ppst.exe

4. click on ppst.exe and go thru the prompts

5. reset your device as needed

6. NOW install lllboredlll_VZW_GPS_Fix_v2.cab

7. use gsfinder,total commander or File Explorer to navigate to \windows\ppst.exe

8. reset your device as needed

9. Dial *228 option 1

(the above step is the steps I did, option 2 also works but I needed to prove it takes a full update without rewriting data)

10. reset your device

11. Install HTC GPS Tool if needed

12. I would suggest a soft reset… do what you want on this one

13. Open up HTC GPS Tool. Set Chip to Q 7500 and mode to Cold Start (left soft key for those who dont know) then set baud to 4800 and open port.

GPS navigation software maker ALK just introduced CoPilot LIve 7, an exclusive edition for HTC Touch Diamond.

The software comes on a DVD which automatically transfers and installs maps and software to Touch Diamond. You don’t have to do much as far telling CoPilot how to talk to the GPS receiver since it automatically detects the phone’s built-in GPS receiver.

The display is apparently also modified for Touch Diamond and you can use the wheel to zoom in and out. It is currently out in Europe for £60 for UK and Ireland maps and £90 for maps of all of Europe.

HTC keeps coming out with phones with embedded GPS. This time it is HTC P3470. The device is not quite ‘high-end’ for it only has a EDGE and no support for 3G networks. However it still has a decent set of features better than most phones. Take for example the 2MP camera, 2.8″ QVGA touch screen, and of course the embedded GPS receiver.

HTC also has bluetooth, microSD card slot, 256MB ROM, and 128MB of RAM. Available in Europe at the end of this month for only 500 €…

The phone we've previously known as the HTC Kaiser or the 8925 has just been named the HTC TyTN II for the European market. The Windows Mobile 6 phone will be available under T-Mobile, Orange, Vodafone and Telefonica (includes O2), and will have the standard 3.5G connectivity, Windows Mobile 6, HTC's Home screen, GPS, TomTom Navigator 6, 3-megapixel camera, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD card, and the flip-up screen. No price was specified, but if the first TyTN was any indication, this will be expensive. [HTC Europe]
