Magellan iPhone case includes battery and its own GPS receiver

Magellan iPhone case includes battery and its own GPS receiver

Yep, you heard it right. This 200 dollar case from Magellan includes battery and its own GPS receiver for your iPhone. This must be the first of its kind. This iPhone is not only high tech but also very rugged and may give you a false sense of confidence that you can do anything just because you won’t scratch your fancy glass screen. Not to mention it is also IPX7 waterproof - meaning it can be immersed in 3 feet of water up to 30 minutes.

Called ToughCase, Magellan made sure the device worked with both iPhone 3G/3GS and iPod Touch and you had access to all the functions of the device. As far as hardware specs Toughcase comes with a whopping 1840mAh battery which should double your phone’s life, and a SiRF Star III GPS receiver. Also the added GPS functionality should work with any GPS navigation app you wish; it doesn’t have to be Magellan’s own GPS navigation app.

You can pick up Magellan’s ToughCase from their site or Apple Store. You don’t think you need a rugged case? Then maybe you’ll like their iPhone car kit we reviewed not too long ago.

Magellan RoadMate 3065

Magellan RoadMate 3065 must be coming out shortly in the U.S. since it just made it through FCC. One of the biggest features that puts RoadMate 3065 ahead of the others is that it can ‘wake up’ at a preset time to download traffic information for you so you can make a more advised decision at the beginning of your trip rather than during.

However it sounds like this is going to be a premium feature yet we still don’t know how much it will cost or how it will download traffic data. What do you think? 3G or WiFi? - I mean your garage is possibly is in your home WiFi range - that could work most of the time…

Magellan eXplorist GC

Magellan will soon be announcing a new handheld specifically made for geocaching called Magellan eXplorist GC. From what we could gather from a page that no longer exists on GPStracklog the eXplorist GC will not be a touchscreen device but be very bright. You don’t go geocaching in the night do you?

It looks like Magellan wanted to announce this first… We’ll have to wait a couple of more days it looks like.

We’re not used to this naming convention from Magellan. Their newest model that showed up on Best Buy’s website is called Magellan SE4.

Magellan SE4 is a GPS navigation system with a 4.3″ screen, preloaded with Navteq maps that includes 48 contiguous states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, text-to-speech, 6 million points of interests, and multidestination routing.

How much? $180.

Magellan SE4 navigation unit turns up at Best Buy

Well, Magellan doesn't seem to be doing much talking about this one itself just yet, but Best Buy has a fresh listing for a new SE4 nav unit from the company, and it seems to be available right now. Better still, Best Buy also looks to have knocked a full $60 off the MSRP right of the bat, bringing it down to just $119.99. That'll get you a 4.3-inch touchscreen, NAVTEQ maps of the 48 contiguous states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, six million POIs, and text-to-speech and turn-by-turn voice prompts, but seemingly few other notable features to speak of -- not even so much as a memory card slot or MP3 playback, if Best Buy's listed specs are right.

Magellan RoadMate 1700 7-inch PND gets $299 preorder

Magellan’s hefty 7-inch PND, the RoadMate 1700, has now got a price and a release date, with the touchscreen navigator arriving for preorder on Amazon.  Set to hit shelves on October 10th, according to Amazon (while Magellan themselves seem to think it’s already on sale), the WVGA PND will cost $299.

magellan 1700 08 25 09

That gets you integrated AAA TourBook and Roadside Assistance, together with the company’s OneTouch UI that promises easier access to frequently searched-for addresses, favorites and other common details.  The 1700 is preinstalled with US, Canada and Puerto Rico mapping, and has highway lane assistance, spoken street names and route-optimization for multi-destination journeys.

Since you can’t take on mobile phone navigation apps without a few added extras these days, Magellan have thrown a couple of neat tricks into the RoadMate mix.  The 1700 has a microSD card slot, for use as a PND, but also has a video-in jack which means you can use it as a larger display with your iPod or other video source.  Bizarrely, though, they don’t supply any cables to actually do that, so we can see many people never actually realizing the feature exists.

Magellan RoadMate 1700

The Magellan Roadmate 1700, the latest from the company, aims to impress with its 7-inch screen.' It features 6 million points of interest, text-to-speech, and multiple point routing capability - all standard fare for a GPS nowadays. It’ll include maps of North America, AAA Tour Book, and lane assistance as well. All of that is just child’s play when compared to the super huge screen, though. Magellan is definitely trying to convince you that your mobile phone screen just won’t do. The Magellan RoadMate 1700 will hit stores on October 10, but you can pre-order one now at Amazon for $299.

The Magellan RoadMate 1700 GPS navigation unit has been leaked out on selected online retailers, where it will share many similarities as with its other RoadMate siblings, although you will find the added advantage of a more generous 7' display here to show off its AAA TourBook in full glory, complete with 6 million points of interest, text-to-speech and multiple-point routing capability. You can place your pre-order for $300 a pop, and expect the RoadMate 1700 to ship sometime this fall.

Magellan RoadMate 1470 review

magellan-roadmate-1470

Magellan RoadMate 1470 was announced back in April and today we have a review for you - in case you are interested in spending your money on one of these. (Currently $194 on Amazon)

The first you’ll notice about the RoadMate 1470 is that its huge 4.7″ screen. Compared to the usual 3.5″ and 4.3″ screens, 1470 is a behemoth. Another thing about the RoadMate series in general is the improved interface which includes quickspell, and exit POIs.

Here are some unlikeable remarks from the review:

  • The font for distance to next turn (on the left side of the top bar) is smaller than other numbers displayed on the screen, making it more difficult to pick out this critical number at a glance

  • The bottom of the unit power cord attachment is a bit of a pain; it can only be connected after sliding the unit into the mount

  • I wish the RoadMate showed the speed limit, but you’ll have to step up to the Maestro line for this feature.

Magellan RoadMate 1470

magellan-roadmate-1470

Magellan announced 3 new models from the RoadMate series yesterday. RoadMate 1440, RoadMate 1340, and the last one: Magellan RoadMate 1470. We saved the biggest one for last as this GPS navigation system has a 4.7″ touch screen display - kind of big when compared to most other systems out there.

Maps on the device cover US, Canada, Puerto Rico; text-to-speech feature pronounces street names, and the memory can be expanded with the microSD card slot.

Magellan RoadMate 1470 is already shipping from Amazon for $230 even though the one day old press release says it should sell for $300. $230 is not bad for a GPS navigation system with a 4.7″ screen.

Magellan RoadMate 1440

Following RoadMate 1340 which we just mentioned now let’s talk about Magellan RoadMate 1440. Also announced yesterday, RoadMate 1440 is quite similar to 1340 but has a 4.3″ touch screen instead of 3.5″ one which changes the resolution from QVGA to WQVGA.

The other features that are worth mentioning are the text-to-speech, microSD card slot, AAA TourBook which provides ratings and descriptions on AAA approved places to stay and eat, AAA Member Roadside Assistance, highway lane assist, and the ability to get traffic update with an optional antenna.

The price for Magellan RoadMate 1440 is set $250.

The HG-100 heads up display is finding its way into western hemisphere under different names with a few changes. AutoSport is offering this GPS enabled heads up display as HG400 for $150. HG400 gives you compass heading and speed readings while you drive by projecting the information onto your windshield so you can keep your eyes on the road ahead. You can see your speed in MPH or KPH, and even set a speed alert to warn you when you’re going too fast. It also has bluetooth antenna so you can hook it up to your PC or a PDA to get navigation functionality on those devices.

Magellan Maestro 4370

Magellan Maestro 4370 which we first mentioned at the beginning of this year has shown up recently on Magellan’s website. It is priced at $600 making it their most expensive GPS navigation unit.

Looking at the features we can’t quite tell why it is so expensive. It has a 4.3″ screen, text-to-speech, bluetooth, FM transmitter, traffic receiver, and maps for the 50 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico, and lane assistance.

I guess thinking about it, it has almost the same features as the Garmin Nuvi 765T which is also priced at $600.
